  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Storm Event at RED Studios Hollywood on March 10th

Agreed, I had no idea Jake or anyone else I know on here was there because I dont know what anyone looks like, except Joseph, thanks to the "Hat"
and of course KETCH ROSSI... who is everywhere at once :)

He he, it was nice seen familiar faces again, an meet new ones, STorm Rocks, and I love the UI, I get so confused while
just learning other Apps, but I find Storm nice, clean, and easy to go around, so Storm will be on all our Systems ;)

Great to see everyone again and get some fantastic one-on-one time with the guys from the Foundry. What they are doing with Storm is incredible, and I can't imagine any Epic owners going forward without it. Such ingenuitive features. Bring on Stage II!! :w00t:

It was a pleasure meeting more of you in person.

Storm guys, even I could run that app, keep up the great work and please keep the user-friendliness factor.

If you haven't seen 5k close-ups projected at 4k on a 40' screen from say 25' away or so, then you really need to. The cars on the streets of NYC, the skin-tones, the detail... so much detail... yet always smooth and gentle. It felt a touch smoother than M-X 4.5k, and perhaps a touch higher resolution despite the fact that 4.5k already yields 4k resolved detail. The London shots on the M-X reel are jaw dropping. They make me want to get on a plane there. What a beautiful city. There is something happening in 5k closeups that took the highest honors of the night for me. Perhaps the fact that the footage felt a bit smoother yet, over the 4.5k material. I am no DP, but you need to see this on a 4k projector. If 4.5k blew your socks off when projected at 4k, you will love 5k.

We only saw one HDRx shot, the one of the barn. But we saw the action of the slider as the shot was "mixed" all the way from one extreme to the other, then brought back to their chosen grade. I suppose that was real time on RedCine-X. I briefly pestered Ted as best I could, and he graciously obliged. If I remember correctly I think he said they are hoping to have "a dozen or so" HDRx shots from different productions to show off at NAB. Don't miss NAB!

Everyone knows RedVolts are working, but I was compelled to take a picture of these two puppies innocuously charging in a dark corner of the room.

Was a really enjoyable night everyone (even if I was a bit jet-lagged, still being on Sydney time) The group from the Foundry said it was very valuable to meet so many people from the RED world in person, and get so much feedback on what they were doing.

I thought Mark, Matt and Jim did a great job demonstrating how easy and streamlined the Storm software was to use, and it was great to have all their footage and use case knowledge for all to benefit from. (and kicking out Marks NYC EPIC footage via the rocket to the big movie screen in real time was indeed an nice bonus)

And yes those were my REDVOLTS and chargers hidden in the corner charging up - I can't keep anything a secret from you guys :-)

Glad you all saw on the huge screen how clean and nice the "worlds best videotap" is from the Epic, running the output at full 1080p to the projector via HD-SDI - I've done that little show in about 15 countries now, and watching everyones face light up when they guess it's somewhere between 800 and 2000 ISO, and I tell them that its 5000 ISO and I have the lens closed down somewhat.. that's really fun for me (and for all of you so I've seen :)

So not only can you use that 1080p feed to view pix on set, set color looks for your DOP and Post team as you like in camera with RGB sliders, etc.. you can also record that signal to get your "instant HD version" at full broadcast quality... I'm sure you know of other cameras that are promoting this HD rez logic as the best way to work for TV, and they are unfortunately convincing some mis-informed or ill-informed Producers and DPs that this is good enough to be a true master quality file...

Well in our world 1080p as an mastering cinematography format is not even close to good enough... on the Epic you have your 5k RedCode Raw, and your 1080p output at the same time as you like it... use it as you see fit for various projects, but always know that you have a true high resolution file to work with to take to 1080p or 2k or 4k or beyond as you need, today and into the future when we all look at and think of 1080p as we do 480i now, a vestige of the low rez past... Having your Cinema Rez Raw and your HD as you need it is much more powerful than just having the 1080p as your only version.

Was great seeing so many people show up at the event that have been shooting and doing editorial and DI finishing with RED since the very beginning... Thanks to all that made it out and made it a really fun and motivational night for all of us... looking forward to NAB 2011 more than ever now!

Oh yeah, and I just need some more really good production shots of HDRx use to get them to show off at NAB... We just have a few now, and as more and more cameras roll out and into customers hands, I make a humble request that if you shoot some rocking HDRx that you are really proud of, please send us the R3Ds so we can grade em up and show em to the world in Vegas!

Storm will be the defacto DIT software by rme end of 2011 from Epic to 5D
Just awesome software and for <$400 = no brainer
Really great app - but Epic at 4K on Reds 40 foot screen = insane good...

I went in thinking that Storm made no sense b/c we have RedCine-X. I left thinking that owning Storm is no brainer. If you value your time even at $1/hr, this software is "have to own." It will save you time and allow you to do so much that can't be done in RedCine-X (not to bash RCX but Storm IS THAT MUCH BETTER).

And the people from the Foundry were super nice and wicked smart. Totally, 100% impressed.

It was great to see Ted in person, meet some folks I've seen before as well as some new ones :001_smile:. Very nice time. Thanks so much.

HDRx is a sort of crucial battle for EPIC against 1080p alliance.

If EPIC win that DR and latitude game then it will become probably the absolute winner at NAB,

but if not then in that case the battle will continue until HDRx get fixed or even revisited.

Also I was happy to see from all those recent Jarred's NYC fashion shots that new color science is finally fixed with EPIC.
