Did a search but couldn't really find much.

I was wondering how the RED one holds up in dusty conditions. I will be shooting offroad truck races in Baja California next week and was definitely going to tape off any unused ports but was also considering a rain cover.

I am certain it is going to be quite dusty and was just looking for some input.

Thanks,
Bryant

I was filming King of the Hammers uktra 4 race, and saw someone with a RED, with no cover, and it was one of the worst dust-wise its ever been. Just tape up the ports, you should be fine.

This seems like a well designed product, but it appears to be out of stock at Filmtools.

Perhaps you could order one directly from Camera Essentials.

I've just finished a film in old asphalt and coal mines, very dusty. Before the job I got some Muslin (a very thin cotton material) and taped strips over the vents. I also cut out larger sheets to cover the front of the Mac towers.

It worked perfectly and you could see how much crap it stopped just by the fact i had to change it every couple of days.

BUT....this film was shot in Norway in temperatures down to -20, so not sure whether this method would cause overheating in your location, would have to be tested

Just got back from Afghanistan. Taped up all the ports and used doubled up air vent filters (mainly on the intake side). Worked perfectly. Ordered the filmtools/camera essentials bag, but there was a manufacturing defect (velcro sewed on incorrectly). They are rectifying the mistake now, but that may be why filmtools is out of stock.

If you do tape up the air vents (a reasonable trick if it's really dusty) then the camera cooling is via heat radiation from the body.

So just make sure you let it do that as efficiently as it can i.e. don't wrap it up in a blanket too :-)
