Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what would be an ideal computer setup for these cameras. I am planning on getting a new computer custom built in the next few weeks and i'm wondering what would give me the best results, with a budget of around 6-8000. :thumbup1:

Personally, I'd wait for a Sandy Bridge Mac Pro if I were you. But that's just me. I have no idea when that will happen. I also have no idea when I could get a Scarlet, so it may or may not be available when Scarlet Ships.

A New FCP will be out soon as well, so all in all, waiting is the best answer.

u could build a tank of a premiere editing system for 3 grand. then spend a couple more on monitors and sound and still have money left over. - premiere + mercury + scarlet = win

but yes i would still wait.

+1 on this.. Been looking for the same, my system is built just need a solid video card.. Going to hold out till last min as the card is an easy install.. lovin' it..

I'm just getting a 15 inch MacBook Pro and will get a Thunderbolt RAID (probably as soon as G-tech start making them). Quad core Sandy Bridge should be fine for Scarlet footage in Permiere and FCP. If I was planning on doing a lot of EPIC editing I would go for something more powerful though.

Thanks for all your help im starting to get a general idea! I am feeling that I kind of want to go towards windows though. I like Apple just as much but for me i feel a little more comfortable on windows. any more suggestions?

Ehhhhhhh, if the main purpose of your computer is going to be editing then I would definitely get a Mac. I don't know what you've used before, but if you sit down with OS X for a while then I think you'll feel much more comfortable with it. Mac is pretty much the standard in the video/design world. (however, I'm a pretty big Apple fan in general, so maybe I'm a little biased)

Whichever way you roll with Mac or PC, 6-core Intel processor, at least 12GB ram, Good hardware raid card, and BIG fast hard drives. We'll see what the new FCP does soon, but CS5, and Redcine-X both use the CPU more than the GPU for dealing with Redcode.

If you are not slave of any particular operation system, build PC and you get 2x faster computer with half the money (vs Mac).

What if you don't have the knowledge to build one..what are the
best value turnkey solutions out there..that is if there are any at all?

I agree with Lee and building it isnt a problem its just deciding exactly what i want in it. Right now im thinking asus rampage III extreme motherboard with Corsair Dominator memory, Visiontek ati radeon 5870 2gb graphics card, and a 6 core intel i7 ultimate processor.
Hows it looking so far, and can anybody add to it what they think would fit well?

I recently had zero problems editing with raw R3Ds from a RED one shoot on my i7 laptop with PPro CS5 on Windows7. Using the Mercury playback hack with the Nvidia card that came with the laptop. Should work great on the lighter Scarlet file types. Not sure about Epic footage since the file size and processing power needed increases quite a bit. I spent less than $1K on the laptop. CS5 bundle was around $1500 end of last year.
You can edit RED footage on a budget. But more processor power, GPU and RAM is always helpful. I try to get the best cost to performance ratio. No need to spend 3 times the cost today to get the same power at 1/3 the cost next year. Same reasons I love RED.

You can wait for Sandy bridge but if the purchase was today, I'd say you should get :
- a decent processor like i7 950 or 960 (300$)
- a good motherboard (200$)
- 24gb of PC12800 ram (500$)
- a solid graphic card like GTX480 or 580 (500$)
- a standard or 2 raid 0 500gb hard drives for system (80$)
- 4 or more 500gb drives mounted in raid 0 for editing (160$)
- 2 or + 2gb drives for backup (200$)
- a good 750W or 850W power : 150$
- a large case for more hard drives in the future : 150$

This is less than 2500$, you can complete it with any options you need for your specific work... + monitors, Raid adapters for more disks, etc...

I'm using that motherboard with Dominator memory from Corsair 12 gb CL7 with an i7 970 + 2 x GTX 470. It's not cheap but you can work very easily on R3D with CS5 & RCX. :smile5:

Thanks its nice to hear it works well from someone thats using it! Now im just trying to figure out the last few things i need to get before i order the parts!

It's off topic, but I love the names of some of these components - Dominator memory, Rampage motherboard. Maybe Intel should have called their chips Eviscerator instead of Sandy Bridge.
