  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thunderbolt SSD / CF- Reader

SSDs will have options for enclosures and whatnot. CF and other memory cards probably won't get any super-speed readers until they come up with new chipsets that can exploit the potential of the new interface.

well anything above (consistent) 90MB/s transfer speed 'd be appreciated.

i would have also appreciated some of the last weeks MBP's rumors being
true, like putting the OS on a separate 16gig-SSD, leaving you with the choice
of either packing the aluminium shell with another SSD / HDD or a SSD/SSD solution.

in a nutshell: as long as the peripherals do not support thunderbolt is nothing much more
than a logo next to a connector.

except this one maybe.

reminds me of this tyre-ad slogan: "power is nothing without control".

Thunderbolt to eSATA converters should be dead easy to make (most SATA chips are connected to a PCIe bus anyway so they should just need one more chip), so I think we'll have them within a few months. You could then use that with RED Station, hard drive enclosures, RAID devices, etc.

You'll probably see a Thunderbolt port on the RED Station and a lot of other devices eventually, but in the meantime, eSATA is probably the best way.

I'd be looking for a PCIe solution via an off-board adapter. Thunderbolt is a direct connection to the PCIe bus on the motherboard. This would be a lot faster than eSATA, and you could daisy chain a Thunderbolt drive like the Lacie LBD on the back of it.

Give it 3 months...

USB3 card readers are out now that cover you for the fastest CF cards out there.... provided you're using a PC of course, since Macs don't have USB3 ;)

Ditto on eSATA caddies, plugs etc for the SSD offload side.

HTH
