Just got a confirmation from Red that they’re still taking orders for Red One. As much as I want to wait for Epic, my new project starts in May and it’s unlikely I’ll be able to get it in time. I’m putting together a purchase list that will provide both hand-held and tripod mounts. It’s a barebone minimum for me to start, and I hope to expand on this in the future. The list does not include lenses, tripods, mics, and all the other goodies. I would appreciate any suggestions or reminders. It’s a university purchase, btw, so sorry I can’t entertain used offers.

Red One (Mysterium-X) $25000
Element Technica 15mm Studio Hybrid - Bridge Plate $900
Element Technica MANTIS Hand-held Kit $2000
Element Technica Arri Dovetail 2060/2575 12"$435
Element Technica Double Drive Mount Kit - 15mm $725
Red power pack $1450
Additional Red bricks x2 $900
Red One 1.8” SSD module $1500
Redmag SSD 64GB $950 (I have a couple of Sony SxS. Are they compatible?)
Red Station Redmag 1.8” $250
Bomb EVF $3200 (Is this terribly back ordered? If yes, Cineroid a good alternative?)
Zacuto EVF Mount Kit $260
Optitek's Nikon Pro Lock mount $750 (I read this the best Nikon mount for Red1)

$38320

You'll need at least two Red chargers - they aren't simultaneous chargers, and your Red will use up Red batteries slightly faster than one charger can charge one up! Probably makes sense to get two Red Power Packs, or investigate a third party simultaneous charger like Switronix's Red offering. 4 Red batteries is a minimum. 5 is good to have.

Unless you are mounting on an OConnor 2060/2075 you can probably go with the cheaper ET 1030 dovetail.

Sony SxS are not Red compatible.

Have you considered the Red Pro 7" LCD - it's very useable, lighter and much more versatile than the EVF - at least for my "indie" style of shooting, although have also used it for high end commercial shooting for a major UK brand. Don't get the small 5.6" one as it's inferior in every way but size and weight.

Optitek Nikon Pro Lock is solid, but you could also look at Allstar's A-System interchangeable mount which also has good reviews.

(snip)
Red One 1.8” SSD module $1500
Redmag SSD 64GB $950 (I have a couple of Sony SxS. Are they compatible?)
Red Station Redmag 1.8” $250

Highly recommend you get at least 3 (4 is better) RedMag SSDs. While making a quick backup and recycling your camera media is an option, it may cause you more headaches than you imagine. I also recommend getting a second RedStation reader for the 1.8" SSDs, if the only one you have dies or gets a soda spilled on it you are going to be in a world of hurt but quick.

Until the supply issues on the Bomb EVF resolve, I agree with Eric that the 7" RED LCD is a good alternative. 3rd party monitoring solutions will lack the slick integration with the menu system enabled by the 14 pin LEMO connection employed by the RED monitors - plus, its lightweight and has a very good image. YMMV.

Cheers - #19

Thanks for the feedback, Eric and Blair. I've updated the list to include Switronix, more batteries and media. Can't seem to find 9" dovetail, though. Regarding the display, my concern for the LCD is that I'll be shooting under very intense sunlight (summer in Tibet). I'm wondering if I would be able to see well enough on the LCD screen.

Red One (Mysterium-X) $25000
Element Technica 15mm Studio Hybrid - Bridge Plate $900
Element Technica MANTIS Hand-held Kit $2000
Element Technica Arri Dovetail 1030 9" $475 (out of stock, can’t find it anywhere else)
Element Technica Double Drive Mount Kit - 15mm $725
Switronix XC-4LSRED Four Position Simultaneous Charger for Red Bricks $1170
Red bricks 6-pack $2100
Red One 1.8” SSD module $1500
Redmag SSD 64GBx3 $2850
Red Station Redmag 1.8”x2 $500
Optitek's Nikon Pro Lock mount $750

Display option 1
Red Pro LCD 7” $2500
ET RED Monitor Mount w/ Female V-Lock & 19mm Speedy Clamp $350

Display option 2
Bomb EVF $3200
Zacuto EVF Mount Kit $260

Total: $40820 - $41430

Add: rain gear (ET's works fine, others out there); handles; cables and back up cables; insurance!

You don't need the drive kit... U have no drives...SSd replaces cf.

Why new?

Why new?

Sorry, don't mean to cut into R1 sales here, but a new R1 has no more trade-in value than an executed R1. There are many on the list- including ours. Save yourself a little money with used gear. Or rent or lease for a couple months for your project. I'm all in favor of owning the tools, but you don't HAVE to own them for one project.

Arthur,

Dino is absolutely correct. You don't need a double drive mounting kit for Red drives you are not buying.

Take that money and use it to buy a battery mounting solution. You will need a way to attach your bricks to your rails and your Mantis rig.

Element Tecnica makes some great ones.

You might also consider a hot swap plate for your batteries.

Also ... If you begin shooting in May, you better make damn sure that you are going to get your SSD drives in the next 60 days. I'm not so sure I would bank on that if you have not already ordered them.

Good luck to you Arthur.

Peter, I was going to get drive mount kit for battery mounting. Can't seem to find the battery mount on the right of your picture. Looks like this one (currently on ET web site) would work.

Greg, I don't need a new Red1. As I stated in the original post, this is a university purchase and I have to spend $32k through our purchase system. The other 10k will come from a different grant, and I'll have more liberty on how to use it. I'll ask our fiscal officer and see if they will accept any used items. I imagine warranty and service are the main issues.

where do i get the left one on your picture? and whats the exact name of this battery mount?
