Wanted to see what type of focus systems are out there for 3D rigs.

I own a Bartech but it has the analogue receiver and I haven't done the digital upgrade yet.

I've seen the Arri, c-motion, Preston, and tried the View Factor (but didn't have much luck).

Any more out there? Even hardwire will do.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There's is a very nifty one done by the same gentleman that made the Moviecam (and Arricam). It was featurde on one of the latest RCs (Red Centre podcast); see http://www.fxguide.com/therc/the-rc-80-2/ or http://www.easyfocus.at/

Might be more than you are asking for, as it actively measures the distance via a laser matrix...

Denis, if you happen to be near our shop next week, I would suggest stopping by. We have a complete lens control solution that is in the final stages of beta now that is 100% designed for 3D from the ground up. It has been working tirelessly on many huge broadcast shoots and now on cinematics and commercials. We are very close to production release.

I'm confident the ET system will kick ass and I hope to use it soon!

The new Cmotion "Cvolution" is also at the top of the heap....it is very feature rich but it doesn't come cheap to purchase. Trust me I know, since I own one....

As far as rental a Cmotion or a Preston system for a 3D rig generally will run you about $700 a day.

I read that the bartech with the new digital receiver is capable of "3D" mode. So you could maybe use that for focus control......

but with 3D your going to want a more full featured system than that.

As far as I know the current systems that work in 3D;

C-Motion
Preston
Element Technica (very soon!)
Bartech
Viewfactor (the one time I used it, it was horrible)
someone told me recently that the new ....redrock....WFF would have a 3D mode as well.

The top 3.....Cmotion, ET and Preston. Should be very close in terms of capabilities and reliability. Alot of times it just comes down to whats available in the rental house! There are so many 3D productions going on right now!

Joey since our ATOM rigs come with Heden Motors, I will definitely stop by to
see what you guys are up to before taking delivery of our first ATOM rig ;)

Hi...

I have a rtmotion Pro-MK2, the cheaper 3d focus controller.

http://www.rtmotion.com/

Very promising technology. Yo can use a computer to move motors with the usb cable, all digital. Like a wifi, up to 6 motors (3x2). I tested 3d focus, and worked perfectly. They are planning to made a thinner version of the motor... i'm waiting for that.

... very useful... you can use it wired or wireless. The cables has a typical mini xlr connector 4pin. They have power cables for red or tap.

saludos,

Jose.

Ciao Josè,
I'm very interested in rtmotion focusing system.
We need to focus a 3D system and making i.o. control.
Is it possible?
Please let me know if your system keeps on giving satisfaction.

Thank you,
Andrea

Hi Andrea, I tested some month ago the 3d capabilities without problems. But actually I'm working only with 2D. focus + zoom.

You can use 3 motors, 2 for focus and one for io. The controller has one knob for focus and other small knob for io. The only problem can be the dimmensions of motors, but, they are working on a thinner version.

saludos,

Jose.
