  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The new Macbook Pros are out!

holy crap, apple is finally getting back in the game.new type of 10 g port, and quad core processing. ABOUT FREAKIN TIME!!!!!!

still could use usb 3.0, esata, and possibly a new FW variant. but it's heading into the right direction for sure,, and i'm sure adapters are gonna come out in due time to connect to thunderbolt and give you all that.

I think they look awesome, unfortunately I can't afford a new 17inch macbook pro but maybe when lion comes out I will have the cash to pick one up.
There is an updated page for Lion as well, new version of mail looks pretty cool.

No USB 3.0 or eSATA! Yes, Thunderbolt/LightPeak is great for the future, but we need to talk to today's peripherals.

You still have to buy the 17" to get an expresscard slot.

Default config still ships with a 5400 RPM traditional hard drive. I was excited by the rumours that the OS would be on a separate 16-32GB SSD. Too bad.

Still no Blu-Ray, even as an upgrade.

If Apple loves SD cards so much, why is there no slot on the 17"???

A bit disappointing overall, especially since I have no choice but to buy one to replace my old MBP!

So glad I sold my 17" MacBook Pro last month. These new releases are revolutionary.

i think a 10 gb connection is a HUGE deal. that is 100% a pro connection right there. I think there might actually be a conflict in the unibody design they have with putting an expresscard in the 15 inch, that's just me guessing. but i don't fits the way the cram stuff in a 15 inch macbook pro now.

but with a 10 gb connection, i'm positive they'll come out with hubs that give you everything. I may still get the 17 inch for sxs loading on the expresscard slot, and the thunderbolt for everything else. This is a sign apple is getting back in the pro game.

usb 3.0 i don't think is a big deal, at least 1 esata port would have been nice.

as for BD, there's always external solution, but that isn't a deal breaker for me anyway. i've rarely used any kind of optical disc on set, bigger deal if u wanna make this a work station. Can't wait to see mobile rocket with thunderbolt...

Yes... Mobile Rocket with Thunderbolt will be amazing. It was just too slow before for my purposes. Who wants a Mobile Rocket running at a 1/4 res in REDcine-X... that sucks. Now we can have full res playback on a MBP... so nice. Also can't wait to see the new RAID controllers. I'll hold off on buying an ATTO R680.

Sure. There's nothing like sitting in a moving vehicle working on footage while juggling a stack of external devices all octopussed-up to your laptop!

Remember when laptops were supposed to be portable?

i understand where you are coming from and for what you may want it for it's a disappointment. for on set r3d loading and looks, i'm looking at this as gold. some quality bandwidth to get your files through, and some horsepower for transcoding all at the same time. without having to lug a mac pro around.

I'm really excited about this update and will probably pick up a 15 inch Pro. Quad Core i7 is very cool, and I'm looking forward to a Thunderbolt to eSATA adapter being released.

One thing though - looking through the Tech Specs I don't see the 1680x1050 option for the 15 inch that there used to be... If that's not available anymore, I may have to wait until the next refresh because 1440x900 is way too low res (my work laptop has 1920x1080 on it's 15 inch display...). I just wish the store would go back up so I can confirm...

been sitting on my last generation, pre-Unibody laptop for awhile - still a great machine, easily has lasted the longest time frame that I have ever held onto a laptop.

none of the unibody flavors seemed like enough of an upgrade, until this...

we all need Thunderbolt and fast processors...

gives me hope for future Apple hardware releases...

still don't understand the resistance to USB 3.0, though - why can't we have both Lightpeak and USB 3.0 both? - this is an age of imaging where speed and mountains of peripherals count, the more the merrier....

@Tom.Wong: Keep in mind that display-port 1.2 already has 17.28 Gbit/s, while USB 3 has 5 Gbit/s and esata has 6 Gbit/s. HDMI has 10 Gbit/s too. So it is not that fast. Of course, it may be compatible to the later 100 GBit/s standard.

Isn't lightpeak protocol agnostic? So usb 3 over lightpeak should be a possibility. If it is, this will be the one port to rule them all!

Well, it's main transport is PCI-Express, so you just need a USB controller chip on the other end. You won't be able to get a dumb converter cable though that has Thunderbolt at one end and a USB plug on the other though.

I have a 1st gen 15" unibody right here with a super useful expresscard slot.

Thought the same and checked. You can configure it with 1680x1050 option.

It seems like one has to choose between high speed I/O and using external monitor...
