Yeah, first and foremost I hope everyone is safe.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if The Hobbit is delayed because of this, they just can't catch a break.

Yeah, the hobbit is but a blip on the radar on this situation.

My prayers are for them tonight, there seems to be many people dead and many structures colapsed.

sad.

I managed to find out most of my family are safe through the power of facebook.

Most of my family over here are asleep so they will likely find out tomorrow.

Thoughts are with everyone.

Great news, Tim. New Zealand has always been a place I've wanted to live, but I never considered floods and earth quakes. It seems like they've been hit pretty hard lately.

Hopefully this follow-up quake to the 7.1 they had there last September will now settle the fault line down.

Having suffered through that gigantic 8.8 quake and multiple tsunamis last February on the coast of Chile, I seriously empathize with the Kiwi's plight.

Been there, and done that...and then some :(

The last time I lost someone was in Thailand during the tsunami in '04. A beautiful Thai couple, who I consider dear friends, who lived in a shack on the rocks by the beach. They could literally jump from their doorstep in the ocean on their surfboards. I did go back to give aid during that time, it was a real wake up call for me in my mid twenties. I personally, thankfully, have never experienced nature at her most destructive.

Local news is confirming 65 fatalities so far in Christchurch - very likely more to come.

This is far more devastating than the 7.1 Earthquake in September because the epicenter was only 5km deep and 10km away from the central city.

Our previous most deadly Earthquake was in Hawkes Bay in 1931 (when there were 256 fatalities), I am hoping this doesn't approach that - but it's pretty awful no matter what.

A weird sense of perspective I've seen put on this is a per-capita fatality comparison - With 75 confirmed fatalities at the moment (and many more likely buried) from a population of about 4.4 million it would be like 5,250 people from the US population.

There's probably not a single person in New Zealand who doesn't know people directly affected by this. It's huge.

It's also been declared a national emergency now.

That's a particularly interesting perspective - it certainly feels like everyone knows someone. Guess same was true for Erebus.

It's very much an international tragedy - albeit physically isolated to one crippled city (the rest of the country is fine btw, it's not that small!), and very much an international response. Particular ups to our Aussie cousins who are family (even tho we might bicker like family, there's really a lot of aroha).

There are massive resources going into the city, the best thing those of us safe and well (and away from the calamity) can do for the long-term is donate to the ongoing recovery appeal. The aftermath is a bleak time - it's rebuilding a future which is how we find light again. Chur chur.

I was at work.just before 1.00, about 280 mostly men. indoors. all ok. The current official toll is 113 but that will climb. Kiwi's and Aussies have had a rough time recently. Victoria fires, Pike River mine, Queensland floods, Vic floods now this. The international rescue teams are fantastic. Japan. Australia. USA, China, UK and more. Total pro's. There.s something about recieving empathy from others, here or overseas.
