Epic S35's 5K FF is 5120x2700 and is a 1.896:1 aspect ratio.
1.896: is also the ratio for the 4k/2k DCI formats:
4096x2160 = 1.896:1
2048x1080 = 1.896:1

Is there still an unrecorded lookaround area in the EVF when shooting 5K in this aspect ratio?
That's fantastic - loving those 2700 vertical.. It's great news for 16:9 shoots, and those that want to go anamorphic.
Deanan - what's 5120x2700 in millimeters?
I don't understand... so a DCI mastered film is shown in that aspect ratio?
what's becoming more
common is to frame smaller and record the look around.
27.468mm x 14.580mm
No look around in the full res format but what's becoming more
common is to frame smaller and record the look around.
So you can setup frameguides...
Will those be recorded as metadata for RCX?
We will be able to crop the sensor on recording too, I guess - down the line...
Try reading this and see if it makes sense:

I believe it says that the 2K DCP package is 2048 x 1080 (1.89629 : 1), but from that, the 2K projector shows either 2048 x 858 pixels for 2.39 movies or 1998 x 1080 pixels for 1.85 movies. But I'm not sure if that means the 2K DCP master is always 2048 x 1080 with letterboxing on the top & bottom or left and right sides to accommodate those aspect ratios.

David... What about 4K standards? That x2?
Epic S35's 5K FF is 5120x2700
That is correct. "Full container" is 2048 x 1080 (1.89629 : 1) for 2K and 2x that for 4K DCI standards. However - most DCPs are delivered in 2.39 and 1.85 aspect ratios WITHOUT the padding (letterboxes). If a DCP is created in full container and has letterboxing - the projector presets mask these and you never see them projected.
So you could actually (if you like the aspect ratio) deliver and play out a "1:1.9" film, as that would give you max resolution in the cinema (and from the Epic).
Why do you (RED) call it FF. It's confusing with full format.
Is it possible to change it to Full Censor or similar?
Pat
In film technology, the term would be "Full Aperture" to describe the maximum photographable area of the negative.
Hello David,
In an other post I also sugested Full Aperture, but Full Censor is more specific to digital and could be used on every type of censors, either 2/3, s35, FF, ... and don t refer anymore to film. The logic behind digital is not the same as for film and the needs are different, like down sample, crop for different formats 2.35..., half debayer...
Either way, FF should not be used.
