  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Great Gatsby

Woot! I love The Great Gatsby! And apparently DiCaprio is playing Gatsby...I think that's a good fit.

I really, really loved the Great Gatsby. I mean, come on, it's a classic.

I think every tool has it's place. While I'm not a big fan of 3-D films I think I enjoyed it's use on Avatar. I have to say (in my opinion) shooting this particular story in 3-D is just fucking stupid and utterly insensitive to the material.

I'm wondering too what 3D will bring to the movie itself, besides the studios thinking it will generate ticket sales just because it's 3D.

DiCaprio I'm sure will be great as Gatsby. If the story is treated with enough respect the film will become a classic in and of itself.

If EPIC in used on this show I expect we'll see some fantastic use of naturalistic lighting.

i am glad that dicaprio hit that role, however you boys bring up some really good thoughts.

Yeah I disagree . There was a time would have been with you on the "no need for 3D" thing .I was never completely sold on the idea thinking it was just a novelty and that some movies warranted it but they were few and far between .
BUT having seen a few 3D movies now like the blockbusters Avatar etc and then the classics Piranha 3D :) I've always had a sense after the film that I was somehow there, like a memory , it was a more tangible story. somehow I'd been there & witnessed it .Now the only thing getting in the way of it really hitting home (this viewing experience) is a good storyline, so that's where I'm sold .Even if this doesn't warrant the more inviting shots of an action movie tailored to 3D I think I'll get a lot more out of the subtleties and perception of the 3D "environment" couple with a great story such as Gatsby

The twitter link was also a question.... not a statement.

And no disrespect to the guy, but he doesn't look like he'd be in a position to know.

But I could easily be wrong.

christian, you bring up some poignant ideas as well. there is an experiential nature of things that cannot be ignored.

I'm not sold on 3d as a spectacle only, however this may be just the kind of thing we need. If 3d is here for the long haul, it needs play the game the same way that previous advancements did; by becoming another pillar supporting the story.

Agreed. I am very open to seeing a more serious drama done in 3D, especially if the director uses it to add to the narrative.

Hopefully they can just brighten the screen or lighten the glasses so that I don't feel like I'm missing a huge part of the film due to it being "too dark" ...

The movie from 1974 was far from a classic, so I can't necessarily use the excuse that remakes are a bad idea in this particular situation. Instead, I will defer to the theory that novels of this magnitude tend to be difficult to translate to the screen effectively unless in the hands of a master director with a strong literary foundation who can transfer the essence of what makes the written word so powerful into moving images that capture it perfectly.

As always, I'll hold off judgement until seeing the final result, but this does seem a curious choice.

Like others have said, I'm far from sold on 3D. With the exception of Tron: Legacy, all 3D movies have annoyed, distracted, and "cost" me. But let's face it, the Grid was destined to be 3D.
I think that it's being treated as a visual tool, (and marketing gimmick) when it should be looked at as new form of film. I feel it needs a new set of guidelines, style, and techniques, otherwise, for me, it will remain a distraction.

I too have been waiting for a serious drama to see how 3D reacts and feels in that genre. Hopefully they can bring this literary classic to life in a way that respects the original story.

I feel this way when watching 3D too. The good news about almost every movie being released in 3D is that it will eventually improve. (Avatar was obviously a great movie for 3D, and I'm hoping The Hobbit doesn't disappoint)

Hopefully its shot on Epic. Anyword who will be shooting it? Dion Beebe?

3D or 2D who cares? Steve Sherrick put it best. This can't be a song and dance flick that Baz is so wellknown for and be called The Great Gatsby.

This is very much a novel that is dependent on the internal voice of the narrator and way his view of Gatsby depicts a certain American sadness and insouciance among the monied class that Fitzgerald longed to be part of. It is, in essence, a nuanced tapestry that weaves a small tragedy.

How shooting in 3D could in any way enhance conveying this, beats me. But then, I doubt they will try to make the book as written or convey its subtleties. This isn't what a big Hollywood production generally does very well. DiCaprio is a good fit as Gatsby. I don't think he's Nick Carraway, whom, in my view, is the novel's central character. And the far more difficult part.

I may not win any friends for saying this but I don't think that 3D is here to stay and I personally hope not. It goes against the natural functions of our eyes and brain since the so-called "3D" image is telling us to focus on an image that IS NOT closer than the screen, but it makes our eyes/brain think that it is. Imagine telling an AC to focus on an item in the foreground and an item in the background at the same time. Lenses aren't designed to do it and neither are our eyes, especially when the item in the foreground isn't actually in the foreground. Now, obviously there are many people who very much enjoy 3D and don't see it as a problem or a challenge to look at. I didn't have too much trouble looking at it when I saw Avatar but I didn't really feel like it added anything to the movie.

In case you're wondering, yes, I read the article posted on Roger Ebert's website and it really made sense to me. Here it is for your reading pleasure:

The third dimension of film making is the part that makes it art. Writing, directing, cinematography, editing, color correction, visual effects, etc.

How many of the Best Picture Nominees this year were shot in 3D?

Someday there will exist a true holographic image that will have an actual third dimension and when that day arrives we will look back on this as the awkward age of Hollywood when we convinced ourselves that two flat images were better than one.

Two flat dimensions does not equal a third.

When photographs were first put into motion it was a huge step forward in art and technology. When sound was added it was another huge step. And with color came another big step. Computer generated effects took the medium a step further. I don't think 3D as it is now is the next big step.

Of course, this is only my opinion.

3D is an experience. If you love it... more features offer this option. If you don't, 2D is always an option. RED is agnostic. We do 3D, we do 2D. But we do both better.

I understand that "Gatsby" will be shot 3D. While I'm not sure with what, I do know that Leo is all world and I will watch it not matter what it is shot with.
