  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recently (last 6 months) I started getting error messages during recording every so often. Couldn't find what they mean exactly in the manual and only can guess from their names. Why do they happen and what can I do to avoid them? Most times after getting an error message the camera freezes. The only solution I could come up with is to power cycle the camera and keep going. Sometimes works fine for a day or two, and sometimes happens several times on a day...

Tried different firmware and that did not solve the problem. Currently running the latest 31 beta. Camera behaves about the same...

You guys have these problems?
Any ideas what might be the problem for these?

Seems like you might want to contact RED directly to get some tech support. No?

If the problems disappear after testing with a CF card, its most likely your drive cable has developed a fault. This drove me nuts for 12 months, "hang during post"/"freezes" etc Stay clear of the 6ft 'ers unless absolutely necessary, and try swapping your drive cable. Always carry spares.

I took my own advice (eventually) and literally haven't had ANY problems of any kind since.

You know...I've been experiencing the same problem of late.

I have had one or two in the past, but it was drive related. Sent one drive back and it was repaired. Experienced the problem again with another drive. Sent it in and it was returned because it tested fine.

But it happened again recently. We got the "record fault_codec error" warning. tried swapping drives and got the same error message. Rebooted and the problem disappeared. For now.

No time to get a Log file. I mean you are on set and have already delayed a shot (and we had babies in front of the camera!). So not really sure what to do.

I will probably upgrade from firmware 30.5.0 and see if that solves it.

Don't think - at this point - it is worth sending in.

Codec Errors

Codec Errors

If you have a codec fault to RED-DRIVE it's most likely something in the SATA chain.

Send me a LOG file at stuart@red.com and we can take a look...

Thanks Stuart. That's the problem though. There is never time to get a log file. We just change drives and reboot 'cause we gotta keep shooting.

So not sure how to troubleshoot?

After experiencing a lot of codec faults across 3 cameras, our testing has narrowed down the cause to, apparently, something relating to our studio lighting. We are still testing but the SATA chain did not seem to be to blame (for us).

LOG file is not stored on the media, it's stored in the camera in non-volatile memory. So you can export it to a CF later...

I can't insist enough that you thoroughly test your drive cables, for your own sake!

The drives aren't usually the problem. I sent mine in several times and each time they were "mended" or updated. Made NO difference. Eventually I tried recording onto my only 8gig CF for a day (I never use them), no problems..that only left the cable. Eventually I realised I was looking in the wrong place

As per this thread....

I have had similar problems on both drives and CF cards. I'm on 30.6.12.

Are you on MX cameras Dylan ?

jb

Interesting.

I ran a 30.5 build on the previous season of the show I'm on now and had no codec errors, and now running 30.6.12 AND MX cameras I seem to be getting one a day on average.

jb

Curious. Keep us posted. I am going to try to get a log file when I get back home to try and help source this problem.

Hey Stuart, I got a same issue, I experienced with different builds and left it on a lower build, looks like older build worked fine . If you could look into the build and let us know if there were any changes to the drive/sata

Cheers,

Jack

Hey Jack
Which build is working for you?
I have a camera prep here in Vancouver and would like to request what you think the most stable build might be?
Thanks in advance.

Oh finally you guys picked up on this thread! I almost started to think that I was all alone :) not that it's a good thing.

well, I've been noticing that I was getting errors (about 90% it's the audio_fault) when the camera would get hot, not always though. So, could that be it? Maybe not...

I will be upgrading soon to MX (yay!) and will ask them to put it through rigorous testing afterwards to see if they find anything out of the ordinary. Hope that will take care of it...

Also looking forward to getting my SSD module and never have to worry about those unreliable - though cost effective :) - drives and cables.

Hi Dennis
Have you sent in a log file? This is the most useful way for RED to help us out.

Stuart, does it have to be exported right after we get the error, or whenever? Usually I have a difficulty doing it, cuz 'you gotta keep goin', same as Dylan :) But I will do it the next time I get it. Any error. Right? :) Thanks

I've found it takes a couple of seconds to do this and it's then written to the media. Shouldn't be a hard thing to accommodate.

I'd rather have the damn thing fixed ! ....maybe it would be nice in future versions if it automatically wrote the log file if a codec error ever occurs...of course....im so used to not having them that I've only had to start doing it lately...
