  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can the MX sensor be harmed from handluggage x-rays at the airport? I know CCD sensors can be harmed, but CMOS?
...and what about harddisks (Red drive) going trough luggage scanner?

Thanks,
Marc

IGNORANCE. sometimes goes really far.

but if you like to torture your self.

Why so rude Gustavo? If you didn´t want to answer, why do you post?
It was a simple question. But I am not a complete idiot.
I didn´t have any problems so far with x-rayed cams, and I know the common x-ray at a modern airport is too weak. But somebody I recently talked too (a video camera technician) scared me with his storys.
Have a good day,
Marc

Sounds like a very arrogant and rude way to display your own ignorance.

As a matter of fact, Mark is (at least partially) right! CCD sensors can be damaged by X-Rays. Check this out: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10232819?dopt=Abstract

Abstract:
Continuous irradiation of the CCD image receptor created a 'lesion' at the point of incidence that remained after the x-ray beam was switched off. This signal seemed to be due to permanent damage to the CCD and could be detected after a cumulative exposure of less than 20 R.

However, the current airport scanners' X-Rays intensity is low enough and the irradiation's duration short enough not to cause significant damages to CCD sensors. Therefore, Mark, you shouldn't worry too much about that :)

Well there you go, I learnt something today. I thought it was only magnetism that was an issue for CCDs and CMOS.

I took an original Red One to France on a plane last year and it was fine. They get a bit upset if you take a load of batteries with you but Red drive should be no problem.

It's always worth checking with your airline what their policy is on batteries, as any lithium battery over 100wh is deemed dangerous goods. Could be a very costly if you don't...

Thank you for constructive input.
Liam, I´m travelling with Swit S-8172S 160Wh which can be split in two 80Wh halfs. So no worry about this.
I know, I have the right to have my handluggage handchecked, but when I change 3 or more times the plane until the final destination, this for sure ends in stressful discussions with the security personal. Often they don´t know the passenger rights according to the IATA regulation. Specially on little province airports. On little province airports I saw already "historic" handluggage X-ray boxes, sixties style. And there is a risk for CCD being affected by x-ray if they pass trough such a scanner, even more, when this happens several times. But,
is the CMOS sensor as sensitive to be harmed by x-ray ? Or less, or more?

You'll be fine. Of that I'm sure. I travel all the time with my cameras and have never had an issue with airport security equipment.

In fact, I'm off tomorrow on a round-the-world shoot that will involve airports in poor countries as well as rich ones - I certainly don't foresee any issues with X-Rays. I wouldn't suggest getting your cameras hand checked - just put it through the machine. And of course, smile and wave...

I'm not sure about the facts either, but I did just recently fly with an MX camera. I carried it on and put it through the X Ray machine. Had a shoot the next day... no problems. I think you're good to go.

Liam, Clint, thank you.
I´m leaving after tomorrow without worries.
Have a nice and safe trip around the world.

Marc

A solution we use is to simply ship ahead all equipment - much cheaper, less hassles. If time allows Fed Ex Ground, Shencker Freight (who will even ship highly dangerous goods, not just batteries) If not, regular Fed Ex.
