As some may know - Zacuto is repeating last year's success and doing yet another camera shootout. Seems like this time they are also including the RED, Alexa, F35, Phantom and other cine-style cameras.

Is RED aware of this test and supplying an EPIC for the test - and maybe making sure the RED will represent itself in the best possible way?

By the way - they got an Emmy for best web series for the shootout in 2010.

This is a good question. I'll be interested to see how they choose to handle the massive amount of variables presented with such a wide range of cameras...

Not surprised, and very happy for them. Happens when people and passionate about something. This time it just happened to be cameras. (And talented!) Way to go!!

And very nice gear too. :)

Yes, I really like the guys at Zacuto ... though they are focused on DSLR movement bigtime because it has exploded the whole cinema accessory market (not necessarily a bad thing).

But I really hope Red sends an Epic to them for the test, and gives them whatever support/instruction is needed in order to really show off the Epic. Because of Zacuto's presence in the DSLR/Indie world, a successful showing of the Epic will shut a lot of haters up, and be great PR.

Anthony

P.S. -- Philip Bloom, a bigtime DSLR "guru" has said that the Epic is his "dream" camera and I think he's involved on the show. So would really be cool to see a DSLR shooter like him just blown away by what he sees from the Epic.

I am surprised that a topic this obscure earned an Emmy...

Whoa...hehehe..had same reaction myself.
How did Zacuto steal the Emmy from Glee..The Office and 30 Rock..???

Remember The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
has 19 regional chapters that all give out Emmys. This is in addition to
the more prominent Primetime and Daytime Emmy Awards.
Then there are the International Emmys..Sports Emmys..News
and Documentary Emmys..and Technology and Technical Emmys.
Watch video called "My First Emmy" and you'll get the idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6FgYuO09sk

So Zacuto won in the Chicago Midwest Chapter for
Outstanding Achievement for Informational Program/ Conversation/Interview
in a Single Program or Program Series for The
Great Camera Shootout 2010. And also had a nomination for FilmFellas
Cast 7: “Masters of Non-Fiction” and interview show of documentary directors.
Although they were done for the web and neither show aired on TV the
National Academy in 2010 allowed for web content to compete with
TV content and these 2 were the only "webisodics" even nominated.
So..Congrats to Zacuto..even the show titles were very well done.

Amaze your friends with this Emmy trivia

The Regional Emmy Award statuette is 11.5 inches (29 cm) tall with
a base diameter of 5.5 inches (14 cm) and weight of 48 oz
..As Opposed to that of the national Primetime Emmy, which stands
15.5 inches (39 cm) tall with a base diameter of 7.5 inches (19 cm)
and weight of 88 oz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmy_Award

Arri will win this "unbiased" test. According to dvxuser, the test is being done by Robert Primes ASC, not Zacuto.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread...11-camera-test

Robert is a big Arri fan and the test is not using and Epic, it is using am MX Red One so we all know how this will end.

Here is a Robert Primes quote from a few months back:

"The ARRI Alexa seems to be the presumptive heir to the crown. Its stunning imagery, vast latitude and amazing mix of image quietness and sensitivity combine with superb ergonomics and an open architecture to win my vote. Alexa is not only a nail in film's coffin, but a double headed spike. I'll gladly genuflect in the direction of Munich."

Any guess which one will win?

Why so harsh tone? Zacuto 'boys' are passionate pros who don't give a damn for the number of digits on the right side of the brand in any way other than what the best tool really is, whether is non-DSLR whether not :-)

I love Zacuto, awesome guys and great products. My gripe is why (if the post above is correct) they have someone with such huge Arri bias primarily deciding the outcome. It's like I can already hear the same stock objections about read with the skin tones, etc. BS. Also seems fishy if they haven't at least tried to borrow an Epic for their tests .....

I dont think there is going to be a "winner", but a great reference for the people that has not worked yet with any of this cameras. Will be great for everybody who does not know the magic of MX, or Alexa, or Phantom. I dont think Epic should go there, Epic is just the future brought to present by Jim. :)

Robert Primes was one of the three people that got me into the ASC, so I'm not impartial, but he is a tough but fair-minded tester and he doesn't rig or bias his tests in favor of one outcome or another. And he is very "pro-digital" and has shot almost everything out there on the market, he's very hands-on. If he likes the Alexa imagery, it's because he honestly likes what he sees, it's not because he has any past preference for ARRI, in fact, he has mostly been a Panavision shooter in his career.

His light-bulb test in the ASC/PGA test may have not shown the original Red One in the best light, so to speak, but it was a brilliantly-conceived, tough and fair test as far as I am concerned, having someone walk from the darkest part of a dark room, a number of stops underexposed, up to a hanging light bulb and turning it on, letting them go a number of stops overexposed, and every camera tested was allowed to bracket their exposures and then pick the best one in post for timing purposes. But the basic idea of the test is that you couldn't "cheat" because in one set-up, the actor went through more than a dozen stops of dynamic range, so if you biased your exposure for the shadows, you'd be screwed on the highlights and if you biased it for the highlights, you were screwing yourself on shadow detail.

So whether or not you like or agree with Bob's conclusions, his testing is fair and informative and you can draw your own conclusions from them.

The Alexa is a very good camera, and even Red's own posted comparison test showed a slight advantage to the Alexa in terms of noise and dynamic range. Where the M-X Red One shines is resolution (and secondly, it has a little less aliasing), so if the test doesn't expressly center on that aspect, likely the Alexa image will seem a bit better. But I also think we're picking nits here, both cameras produce pretty nice images.

There is far too much tendency to poison the well here, so to speak, by suggesting any upcoming comparison tests are already biased when people fear in advance that Red won't "win" the test. And in the process, fair but tough testers such as Bill Bennet, Geoff Boyle, Bob Primes, etc. are all labeled as biased against Red before the results of the tests are ever shown, in essence, to bias the response to the test. It's silly. They are just tests, ones of many, you ALWAYS take them with a grain of salt until you shoot your own tests. ALWAYS. Never take them too seriously, no matter what the source.
