We have a cat 5 cyclone bearing down on Australia's northern coast, wind speeds have been clocked @295kms per hour and forecasts predict the wind will go above 300kms per hr and the storm could intensify, a storm surge (tidal) of 6 meters is expected and will coincide with the high tide. This storm is massive, 500 kms wide and is traveling at about 35 kms per hour. Towns are being evacuated and the armed forces have been mobilised.
Take care everyone in its path, or get outta there NOW,:driving:
This could be Australia's worst ever.

OK so no-one cares, I do, apologies for posting on this site, I will try and warn others elsewhere

Good luck Vince! I rode out hurricane Andrew and hurricane Ike ate my brother's house in Texas. Hope you folks get through it with minimal damage and no loss of life.

some people will draw their last breath of air soon......

Cairns etc

Cairns etc

Thinking of you down there. Be as safe as Mother Nature will allow.

I will always remember diving on the Reef out of Cairns with my Aussie friends.

Cyclone Yasi - USA Comparison

To grasp the magnitude of Cyclone Yasi, this is the area it would cover if it was over the US -

Riding it out in Townsville, so far so good. Fingers crossed for everyone in the path of the storm.

That is some crazy weather!

I know a few people across Australia, and it seems everyone is getting hit with something the last few weeks! So sorry. Crazy, crazy weather...

I hope it leaves as little damage as possible and passes by population as much as possible.

Hi Folks

Currently sitting out this cyclone in Port Douglas, Far North Queensland - and before you ask - yes there are REDs and fellow redusers here. Currently in Cat3 where I am. Hopefully wont go higher.

Still have power and communication. Amazingly because I thought they would be gone hours ago. We were even able to speak to somebody in Cardwell currently in the Cat5 region only a few mins ago - and they seem to be surviving it.

Stay safe guys and girls. Even the stormchasers were scared of this one.

This morning they were predicting wind speeds of up to 300kph! After all the floods it is hard to tell which would be worse.

Take care.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The magnitude of this storm is overwhelming. God speed.

It's after 3am here

I'm waiting for the next update on the cyclone tracker. It's what I've been watching all night. This is the second cyclone in a week for the region but obviously this ones the monster.

pretty much glued to this

it's almost like a game of stay away from the red dot with the 5 in it. And bonus points if you stay to the north of it

And thankfully, right where I am didn't and isn't getting hit by that big red dot.

But for the people who did - I don't know what to say. Terrifying is a word that comes to mind. I hope you're all ok out there.

I need to sleep. Lets just say it's been a busy couple of days.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Looks like I'm one of the luckier ones in this senario. Missed us, but not by bloody much

Cheers

Cam

Be safe everyone! As tempting as it might be to get footage....don't do it if it puts your life in jeopardy. Hopefully the damage is as minimal as possible given the circumstances.

Keeping hopes up for you folks...
