Looking for a new computer monitor for my mac pro. I have my rocket for accurate viewing but would really like a computer monitor that calibrates and matched pretty well. Pretty unhappy with my HP pos. So far the best thing I've seen is the Eizo's but I don't want to spend that much. Some of these NECs looked interesting. Anyone have any experience or advice for a 24" monitor in the $700-1000 range?

It's tough using a computer monitor, unless all your content is going on the web. I found a nice 24' 1080 JVC broadcast monitor for around $3K. there are probably better broadcast monitors, but nothing better in computer monitors that I know of.

I think I was misunderstood. I use a panasonic 1710 or some other type of broadcast monitor connected to my red rocket to grade off of. I just wanted to know what other people are using for a decent computer monitor. I like the apple cinema displays, but the new ones are all glossy screens with limited input. So i'm looking for a pretty good computer monitor, comparable to a ACD but with more inputs. I've heard NEC makes good monitors, plus they actually manufacture their own panels.

NEC monitors are good for fairly accurate computer screens. As you mentioned, you're not looking to grade on it, you just want it to roughly match what you're seeing on the grading monitor. I think they could accomplish what you want. I'm forgetting the specific model #s off hand, I'll have to look them up.

So, just fyi, ended up getting the NEC PA231W with spectra view calibration, about $950. I love it, calibrated it to a rec 709 profile, and it matches very well with a regular production monitor. Also, has internal programmable 3D luts, so you can make fine color adjustments without using a computers graphics card. Anyways, really dig the monitor, and highly recommend.

I just got the 30. I hope to have it set up soon.

Do these match up with the Dreamcolor at all? As a basic viewing monitor for R3D playback not grading.

There is no support for 10-bit monitor displays in MacOSX

Macintosh users! Remember that there is no support for 10-bit monitor displays in MacOSX at this time.

So wide gamut color display are totally meaningless for mac users.
This is a known issue and is reported also on the Apple user forum.

diglloyd.com report this specifically for his experience with NEC monitors.

For YEARS i've been looking for that sub $1k monitor to do work on....in the end i had my best luck using Matrox MXO2 LE to output 10bit to my panasonic Plasma that i can setup accurlately for color work.
...jump up a year and then i'm using Redrocket out via HDSDI to AJA Hi5 converter that goes to my HP dreamcolor 10bit panel that is pretty danged good for the price--got mine at B&H for $1900.

BUT, still not a perfect solution. Found a FANTASTIC monitor via Andrae Palmer on another thread and did my investigative work and just ordered it. 10 bit panel with HDSDI and various other pro inputs, carries a variety of monitoring capability: histogram, vectascope, luminence etc.....
Anyway, to get to the point, you can't find a monitor this good for this price: $4,995 + shipping. To top it off they calibrate it for you ANYTIME if you send back to them for FREE the life of the monitor. And yes, professional calibration. For me in Mexico that's a deal....when i drive up every 6months to a year.
