  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Music Video Auto Climax Control "Cabin Fever"

I assume you are showing this off because you are proud of it? Otherwise why do you want us to look at this?

It's not incompetent or anything, but it shows no originality, no real effort, nothing that stands out in any way or is memorable.

If you want a career in music video, you are going to need to work much, much harder, even when the budget is small or non existent. Look at some of the other pieces here on reduser, you can tell the guy or girl spent many a night up, trying to figure out really clever ideas, trying to blow the world away. Your piece is just "standard" in every way, including the post effects which we've seen before and have nothing to do with the song (the song is great, by the way - you really wasted an opportunity here.)

If you are not into trying so hard it almost hurts (or more than almost) I would say stick to corporates. You will get nowhere in the music video or ad world by being merely "competent" - there hast to be feverish passion and insanity behind what you do, and a truly original idea behind almost every choice.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I posted this for any feedback like this not because I am proud of it. I know its standard and well, boring. I did plan on it being a performance video however I did not plan on it being shot in one small room without any kind of style to it, nor doing the shoot alone however its ultimately my mistake for doing so. I should not have agreed to shoot it in this location, I should have had a hand or two and insisted on a better location, etc. This was the first music video I shot since 1993 so it was a lesson learned. Thanks again.

Just to be clear, I wasn't saying you suck or something, just that it looked like not enough passion and time had been put into it.

A word of advice though: you'd be surprised how many potential clients read these forums, so be careful posting what you don't love and is not among your best work.

Wow Rob pretty harsh man. You think there is a lack of passion? Were you there? How can you make that assumption? Did you not read the down and dirty no budget shot for a buddy part? How do you know the band didn't want something super simple? While I will agree that the video feels slow, I do enjoy the simplicity of it. I feel many music videos give into style over substance and it was nice to see a video that focuses on the music. I would lose the post effects for sure but other than that I like the inserts and the dolly work.

It's posts like this that frusterate me on this forum. Before you get judgemental of others work why don't u post some of your own groundbreaking/life altering work, I cant seem to find any here...

I can't post what's not online, and we have been working for most of the past year on a TV series that is not yet released (and will never be online for free anyway, at least not legally), along with some music videos and fashion videos for unreleased songs/collections. I make no claim that it is life altering, it's just disposable pop-culture, but we do put more effort to be original in some way than seems to be the case in this piece.

Besides, no matter how good or bad you may find my own work, it's an honest opinion, and one can have any opinion harsh on not even if one has never shot anything at all. I often post positive comments as well.

Simple can still be creative in terms of using never before seen angles, a new way of using editing, etc. Do what you want for buddies, but if you then post here it's up for comment.

I think there is a cultural difference here too. I am French and fact is we are very harsh and blunt with each other and ourselves. Americans seem to mince their words a lot, we don't.

Now, without the veil of the VFX, the simplicity feels like real intimacy with the band (as Eric liked above), more like a deliberate choice, made in good taste.

A great producer here by the name of John Kennedy once said: "When it comes to effects, either spend a ton of money or none at all - a bit just ends up being noise." Wise words.
