  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Light Iron's iPad Dailies System joins Red#0031 on Set

Tim,

unfortunately you should be used to Threads leading some were else on this forum, it happens all the time and will continue
to do so, it is part of the game, its just important not to steer to far away form it, however in this case the Bigfoot carts are in
deed a fundamental part of what Michael is doing, so not too far off topic of this Thread's subject ;)

In fact I believe He has over a Dozen himself, and it is what we are also doing, well not a dozen but several of them
to work together with Teradeks and iPads with LivePlay ;)

:I hear you Ketch...happens everyday and Im guilty of it too sometimes

I just really want an UPDATE on the status of LIVEPLAY...

but I am also interested in a BIGFOOT Group Buy. :)

The collaborative software system LiVEPLAY is complete and out in dozens of productions where it is being stress tested daily. There will be 2 iterations available on the Apple iStore: LiVEPLAY Lite and LiVEPLAY Pro. Lite will deliver playback, looping functions and viewing only with or without Mac Webserver hosting. Pro will include all the metadata tagging options, customized PDF, XML, and CSV exporting within a secured network.
The cost of Lite will be a 1-time fee of $4.99. Pro can be purchased on a 1-day license, 1 week, 1 month, and 1 year. This is to better serve the needs of small and large productions at a relative pricing.
We are working with Apple now to release both applications within a month and pricing is structured with 1-day licensing at $19.99 up to annual licensing at $999, depending on the needs of the production. For users of the annual license, the cost of integrating this powerful collaborative network is less than $3.00 per day.
LiVEPLAY Server has become extremely powerful and users will be very pleased with how easily it can be integrated into every type of production from commercials to features. We also have integrated a robust 3D tool for logging, tracking, and exporting 3D metadata from productions for easy 3D information accessibility in VFX and editorial. Light Iron is also building additional smart-apps for increased collaboration amongst VTR, Data Tech, and editorial. This includes our iPad Dailies software app code-named titled "Todailies" as well as our automatic file naming software of scene and take, code-named "Stitch."
All of these applications including the updated LiVEPLAY and LiVEPLAY Server will be shown at NAB and demonstration videos will go online soon.

Thanks for sharing Michael, this is FANTASTIC news... it will be a lot more affordable to license your solution than to develop one. VERY exciting, thanks
again for pushing the envelope and making digital file management smarter and smarter.

\EDIT: can you elaborate a little more about the <$3.00/day integration? thanks!

LiVEPLAY sounds very interesting. Having just done a feature with a clunkier iPad dailies workflow I designed, this sounds downright elegant.

Bigfoot Cart group buy? Yes please.

Thanks for the update Michael,

wil sure get the Pro version, just as son as Ron and I get together with the guys of BigFoot to get our carts done.

If you have time will love to get a quick chat with you in order to insure that we get the best specs to build our
carts, for Epic 3D Production work.

fyi, liveplay, as michael currently has configured, is in a small pelican keyboard/gun case about 3 feet by 16 inches and 4 inches thick. inside sits the teradecks, laptop (server), wireless router and the cables to make all of that work together. there is also a space for the ipads in lid of the case.

so no bigfoot needed for liveplay.

also, it is my understanding that michael will license the software only and the hardware must be obtained and pieced together on your own. so the fees that he mentioned does not include the hardware.

that said, i am sure if you are on this forum, and reading this, you have the skills to put all the pieces together and make it work.

we have had the pleasure of using liveplay for about a month on many shows, music videos, commercials & promos (we had it for ABC and the Oscar promos a couple of weeks ago) and everyone seems to enjoy the convenience of the system and the power of the data it creates...this is a must get for owner/ops that go out as DIT's with their packages, a great way to keep the RED ball rolling...ALEXA can't play with this systems as it does not trigger the teradecks on/off functionality...so take that arri alexa (instamatic) lovers!

Great Post Dino, yeah we all have carts and Teradek's, and iPads, but there was clearly a need for a SOFTWARE app to manage this service and thank goodness Michael (and I trust Steve Freebairn) developed this... clients love seeing the dailies streaming like magic to the ipad, but then the novelty wears off when there is nothing to manage the clips.

SO excited for this in our market... and Rawls above works with us all the time, but it looks like I need to raise his rent! You hear that Sean?? hehehe

Michael,

This is fantastic news and a great pricing structure. Thanks for making it available.

Just one question, with the $999 price for the annual license, will is allow to go an ultimate number of iPads or is that per iPad? So if I have 10 iPads going to different department heads, does that have to be purchased each time - i would think not but not sure how it would work through the app store unless it can be done by downloading through iTunes and then put on each iPad that way. But I thoug iTunes only allowed 5 devises per application? Just wondering.

Apart from that, will be getting this as part of our DIT offering.

Licensing is per-iPad. That's the only way to properly manage the permissions and security. The most important aspect of this process is to let productions know that this is a secured system. Otherwise, people will get very nervous about having their projects in the air where people can packet-sniff them and take home 720p or 1080p dailies.
You can make money on it however you want, but here's how it's been working on our end: The system is designed so that users of LP and LP Server can rent their own kits on top of additional iPads. For example, the rental of the LiVEPLAY system may be between $1500 and $2500 per week, depending on how you plan to capture the files (ie: Teradek) and how many Teradek's you have. Then, after production decides how many iPad users want to participate, you rent as many iPads as you need. I rent iPads at about $80.00-$100.00 per week (3G iPad for security).
This is why we make LP Lite and LP Pro - when you have people who just want to view files, they would be the users of LP Lite ($4.99). The collaboration tools of LP Pro will be likely used by fewer people on set, for longer periods of time, hence the pricing structure. In other words, it's unlikely you would have 10 people using LP Pro on the set for an entire year - rather LP Lite will help separate simple viewing from the collaboration options of LP Pro.
Again, we will help people understand the system better with some training videos we are coming out with that user our updated software versions which include 3D metadata support.

Michael,

This makes total sense. I was trying to work out the app store options for this and it makes sense that it is per iPad. Thinking that you might have 3-5 uses of LP Pro for key personal and the others using LP lite, then the small investment for some iPads would go a long way. LP Lite makes sense also for general viewing.

I guess you'd recommend the 3G 64GB iPads, purly for the storage capacities.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the videos and trailing the system.

Hi Michael, can you please clarify this statement? Does this mean you also have separate ATT data plans for all those 3G iPads? Why is 3G "for security'
I understand Pirates 4 or Spiderman 4 are going ti be uber militant about content and piracy but up here, its not an issue 95% of the time.

thanks-

Michael,

When you referenced security, it was attached to the "rental" train of thought. Is this associated with the potential of theft? It is my understanding that the 3G versions can be more accurately tracked by Apple when they are reported as stolen since they have GPS abilities.

Or is there an additional security feature with 3G enabled iPads?

There is a lot more security than just the 3G issue. Since this is a streaming system (not a synced system) the 3G iPad doesn't necessarily come into play as much as the network security system. The ideas is that this wireless system is more secure than hard assets (such as DVDs).

Michael,

What is your thinking for dealing with multiple cameras shooting?

Great job on this!

We are really looking forward to LiVEPLAY and all the offerings described by Michael here. Thanks for starting the thread Dino.

We've just received our Teradek Cubelet's and hope to compile the same setup/system for rent as soon as possible.

Is it correct to assume that it would be possible say, in your PPM to have the necessary personnel advised to download the LP app, (whichever flavor suits their needs, Lite, Pro, etc.), so that on set the DIT running the LiVEPLAY system can integrate those peoples own laptops/iPad/iPhone with our LiVEPLAY Server and router they have in the kit?
If that is possible, is there any concerns to be aware of in terms of those producers or clients, using their devices at the same time for other work in other software, i.e. can one switch between apps with this system without running the risk of losing the proper settings/configuration between takes.

How does this system work in relation to the Teradek's own proxy recording and possibilities of seeing the dailies from a network folder on the web in a separate location?
