Hi,

I'm considering 2x Scarlet Fixed to be used as a stereo pair for short, narrative 3D work. My question is how do you handle sync operations like zooming or focus-pulling during a take?

Is there some functionality in the Redmotes that would allow you to do this - master/slave for example?

Thanks
Mondo

My bet, since its already be stated numerous times that you can slave more than 1 camera to a redmote, and vice versa for that matter.

So all controls are in the palm of your hand, and since you can switch what the focus ring does, I assume you can set it to control nothing, and use the rocker on the redmote to set focus/zoom/iris

I've been thinking of the same thing as the OP so would like to hear RED's response.

It is usually done with a very good focus controller system. The Preston FIZ units have focus and zoom offsets that are user programable to match lens positions, and then there is the zoom tracking in the lens that can need attention. I believe Cmotion and Arri units do also. Maybe others too.

I am not sure what will happen with the Scarlet fixed lens.

I am not sure what will happen with the EpicS fixed lens.

There is no EPIC-S fixed, only the Scarlet 2/3rds fixed.

@Zac C:

Thanks for the heads-up, this is exactly what I was hoping for.

I've been reading through the threads here for months, learning what I can but hadn't come across this information.

True true, thanks for the catch. I have had many long days of Mo-Cap this week.

I believe the Scarlet fixed lens is a marvel of technological achievement. Having said that, I believe it will be next to impossible to get the focal lengths of two discreet lenses to match perfectly for a 3D rig. I believe your best bet is to get mini primes and put them on the Scarlet interchangeable 2/3" cameras. I'm afraid Red will have to show me I'm wrong on this one.

Thanks Jeff,

I am hoping that the Red Fixed lens might offer some improvement in that regard :) The Scarlet Fixed covers all of my needs for short and medium term projects, doing them in 3D would be the icing on the cake.

It would certainly be more than adequate for 4D mesh capture which is another area I'm very interested in.

I remember some comment from someone on the red team that the new cameras could sync at the sensor level for more precise and better 3d performance at all speeds. We can only hope they extend that philosophy to their fixed lenses...

From Ted's interview at Sundance, he mentions that the 2x Scarlet makes a very compelling case for 3D work, that the 2/3rds sensor allows for deeper focus.

I'm filled with hope again!

I am really interested in putting two fixed Scarlets on steadicam for 3D, and I believe Ted did mention that there is a built in 3D sync functionality in Scarlet,
oh men, the closer we get - the harder it is.
