  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well i do a lot of VFX work but this video bugs me since quite some time now:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbx4VIWgU2E&feature=related

Are there really like 20 cameras running in sync, and are morphed together in post ? Or is there a way more easier solution to that.

Maybe shot at half speed with motion control rig ? but the movement of the guys doens´t look like it´s shot overcranked....

Any Ideas ??

thanks
Manuel

I would guess that they might had something like 3-4 cameras running sync, for closeups you can zoom into the footage if you shoot 4k. It looks like every person was shot seperate on green.
This could also be done with only one camera, but it would cost you much more time to shoot and finding good timepositions for switching camera would be more problematic since the person might be at a different pose. So using a few cameras for this would be a good idea.

Thanks for your replies.
Sure Target is a great suggestion, thanks :)

I think we will shoot with 3 Cameras R1 as main Camera and 2 x 7D´s at angeled positions to get a perspective change. I think we will 2-3 different setups and tell the band not to move arround too much.
it´s just one part of the video we plan so we should be fine with time.

Will go and get Sure Target now and try some stuff out.

Thanks for the suggestions

Cool effect.

This Kylie Minogue video has always blown my mind. I have no idea how they pulled it off (though I think it has something to do with when she walks behind poles):

I'm guessing, it's motion control plus rotoscoping. The motion control camera does several circle passes. Sometimes people are duplicated each time it goes around, sometimes multiple people with the same costume are being added to the set. There is a lot of choreography obviously to make it work, and the poles are probably used to disguise cuts. Any overlaps between people are rotoscoped, but since inanimate objects match on every pass of the motion control the scenes can be combined with pretty simple masks. You can see that often the overlaps are not that good.

I think that first video could be a pretty simple morph between angles, from different takes, there are several frames on each move and plenty of motion blur to disguise an action matching cut. If they consistently do the same action to the playback track it should be pretty straightforward.

The Kylie Minogue video is definitely a multipass (well choreographed) motion controlled rig plus a lot of roto work. Actually, the Kylie Minogue video would be easier to edit than the Cloud Conected video. Definitely a multi cam setup in some shots, but other shots are more difficult to explain... good work, whoever did it! :-)

Kylies video is MOCO multipass, it´s explained on the DVD about Michel Gondry as far as i can remeber. (The work of Director Series from Directors Label)

It´s OK if one does not understand how things were made from Michel Gondry, he´s is a genius in making crazy things you´ll never would think of. e.g The White Stripes videos or Chemical Brother videos - fantastic :)

Lets see...Im guesin one camera single band member wides ...the rest is after effects ie comps and zoom/pans.and a hot editor...done
Keeping max resolution for digital zooms and pans...im guessing this video wasnt lucky enough to have MOCO or roto $$$

My take is that each individual performer was shot separately against green, with maybe 3 or 4 synched cameras. The entire performance is then comp'd together, and the camera moves are a mixture of morphs between differing cameras and after effects moves of flat images n 2.5d.

This is particularly obvious at the 2 minute mark where a camera pans to show the left most performer in shot, but the shot of the closest performer doesn't seem to change as much as the shot would indicate and is timed to match him turning his head (the combination of effects masks the move to the casual eye - but I'm pretty certain it's the same shot just rotated in after effects)

Once you looked at it as one big comp it becomes easier to see how it could be a combination of post pans/zooms in post and a few cameras catching synched angles - Having a look through I think they could have done it all with 3 cameras - which isn't a ridiculous amount.

- Just looked through all the other posts probably and see that the multi camera was confirmed on another forum, and someone else had come up with pretty much exactly the same solution for the In Flames video so this post was a bit redundant.

Thanks again for all your great replies.
We found a good way to do kind of this effect shooting with 3 Cameras simultaneosly and putting it together in AE using Sure Target and some Morphing. We did some test with footage we had here from a 2 camera shoot and it worked out fine without too many time to spend in post.

I hope i can present the final video in the Shot in Red Section mid/end February

best regards
Manuel
