i am. i cant wait tho until we have the cpu power in those devices to run premiere cs5 on one of those screens

It's certainly going to be a great tool ! Even if I don't like Apple products and personnal policy.
Somebody already talked about battery issues, because of a higher consumption, battery life could be a problem.
Anyway I say it again for those who like it, it's gonna be huge ! ;)

Edit: I'm more excited about the new asus eee tablet with I5 cpu and gtx gpu ^^

Seems like it's going to make the iPad a much better studio tool.

It improves the resolution, but the gamma characteristics and color accuracy still don't make the iPad an ideal tool on the set. My fear is that non-technical directors will look at it and assume that's the way the picture really looks, which may not be true (and probably won't be).

I highly doubt the iPad2 to have a screen resolution of 2048x1536 - maybe if you take pixel density into account, but a 2K screen on an iPad? Nah...

although i'm not a fan of apple products, especially not ios running ones -
i would buy it instantly if it has a quality, calibrateable highres screen and runs software like photoshop lightroom.
but i guess i'm dreaming too loud :)

I totally know what you mean ... but already it's being used on set I think for dailies and I think as (slightly delayed) external monitoring.

In terms of color accuracy, it's a good point and hopefully that will improve -- I remember Jim's plea to Apple in a Recon thread -- but for it's simple purpose I think the higher resolution will be nice. Sorta like the difference between HD monitoring that's available on the 7D/1D versus the SD monitoring people are stuck with on the 5D.

In terms of process power and Adobe programs, not sure if we will be there yet on this iteration of the iPad -- however, it does seem that they are progressively ramping up the CPU power ... so I certainly see it as possible someday. I imagine Premier is much more CPU intensive than Lightroom ...

Thanks for responses guys :)

I know this has been mentioned before but I would love for this new iPad to function like a REDMOTE and simultaneously give you a monitoring option (perhaps gamma corrected by 3rd party software).

I would like a button to toggle between full screen on any menu item and also fullscreen on the monitoring option. How cool would it be to be able to toggle to full screen monitor with a RGB histogram overlay? ..allllll in 2K baby!!

Oh man that would be so freakin sweet!!!!!

I gotta cut back on the caffein.

Hey,

I use the current iPads for on set dailies. I also use them as a super quick way to run a 4K frame grab of a technical problem out to the DP so they can decide if the set up is useable. However this use always comes with the "not color accurate" disclaimer. They are a useful tools to evaluate performance, content, and framing but certainly not for color.

If the rumors are true the iPad 2 will a fantastic on set tool . . .

Mine is still a great waveform monitor. Can't really ask for much more than bigger Antennas. Or an external Antenna connector on the ipad!

With iPad2 going 2K, youtube at 4K, and samsung handheld transparent displays coming soon at 4K, where does this leave our 1080 TVs and 2K theater projections? A 4K displaying future maybe a lot closer than I expected. That said, it's Epic all the way.

Displays will continue to increase in resolution until pixels are so small they no longer offer any individually identifiable detail. The current "retina" displays that are in the 300dpi range are less than half-way there, IMO. Ultimately, I would not be surprised to see 1200+ dpi screens that surpass photographic print quality by an few times over. It's not so much science fiction at this point, just a matter of when it will happen.

iPad 2 is coming, it's inevitable. I'm not so sure about the 2K screen at this point. Not with the rumored CPU / GPU combo. It's possible, but I'm betting on 1440x1080 myself. Which is still quite a jump, being 1.98 X the current number of pixels. Or what would be "twice the resolution", which sources have leaked. It seems most of the 2048x1536 hoopla is coming from the rumor mill and Mac fanboy sites, who don't understand that's actually 4X the resolution. Mostly because they're even worse at math than they are at journalism.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Apple will announce the iPad 2 at Mac World in less than 2 weeks. I bet the announcement and release of iPad 2 will be a sudden event later this summer or early fall. Later enough to milk the current model and not piss off the over 3 million people who just got one in the last 30 days. But still early enough to catch holiday shopping in 2011. I'm betting on August/September. Mac World is the 1 year anniversary of the original announcement, iPad wasn't even released to the market until the end of April. Apple just sold 1 million more iPads than expected over the holidays and more than half the iPads purchased world-wide in 2010 were bought in October thru December. To announce a new model now would be bad timing... Nearly half of their current user base has only owned the current model for less than 30 days! Presuming that the year-end sales surge was primarily due to Christmas/holiday gifting.

All that said, the resolution on these tablets and mobile devices will continue increasing. No doubt about that. In the not too distant future, 4K will only be "good enough".

Hi Jeff, as usual I pretty much agree with everything you're saying ... in fact, I just read an article on AppleInsider from another source saying this new resolution forecast was "too good to be true." Also, with Apple's planned obsolescence strategy ... why quadruple resolution when they could just as easily please people by doubling it in this variation -- especially considering the other additions like cameras, etc.

Also more or less agree with your timing forecasts. The fact that they just sold over 7 million to holiday buyers makes it sticky for them to suddenly come out with the next "latest greatest" so quickly. Plus, there's no need -- they still have the Verizon launch looming and can probably wait until the summer to announce the new iPad. All the reports seem to lead that it might be sooner than you think (you said Aug/Sept) but I would guess it's within a couple months of your guess. Sometime in the summer basically or maybe May at the soonest.

I say that partly because there is a LOT of hype coming out about it already, and I don't know if they can sustain the momentum long enough to last until the fall. That's almost a full year and even though Apple likes to stagger their launches, I don't know what else they'd release between now and then other than the CDMA iPhone and maybe an iPhone 4s. One of the things that I think led to Apple's record-breaking year in 2010 was how well they timed their new product launches (this really kept them in the forefront of everyone's mind, far better than the competition) ... with the iPad early in the year, iPhone 4 in the summer, Macbook Air/new iPods in the fall ... thus I would expect them to follow that same formula this year if at all possible.

But maybe the iPad 2 will be their fall product, iPhone 4s or 5 summer, and then Verizon next month. Maybe ... maybe not. Part of me also thinks there's as big a concern of alienating their Verizon customers by releasing a better iPhone in the summer so close to next month's launch. That's why I think the iPad 2 could be their June product.

Anyway, it's all speculation and doesn't affect what I do professionally all that much ... and no matter what, even a double-boost in resolution along with the other features will make it both a better personal and studio tool :)

Hi Jeff,
as someone who prints on exhibition grade paper .. I think you have missed some information.

Printers can only print 8 colours, give or take, and have to trade resolution (dither) to get the full colors.
Also each pixel consists of 3 dots, so you would be comparing 900dpi full range dots to 1200 8ish fixed brightness ones.
In practice, 360 ppi image resolutionis is more than needed for the best small prints on the best paper. Larger ones need less.
All that - due to the needed dithering - printed at the 2000+ dpi to get the finest tonalities.

The term retina display on the iphone 4 was coined because at a given distance you cannot discern any more detail.
Quadrupling the pixel count on the ipad would still return around 260ppi - comparable to most non-exhibition grade prints at this size.
That is, if it happens.
