hey guys,
any help on this would be greatly appreciated. drive mounts fine in camera. I can record, playback, skip around to different files...mounts instantly and unmounts fine.

It won't mount on my mac using USB, FW400/800 with/without power to drive. Of course there is valuable footage on the drive. It crashes disk warrior and disk util doesn't give me the option to run any repairs.

I hope someone has a quick easy fix for this ;)

I've read the other threads on this and tried just about everything except a PC to mount the drive. (no access to one currently)

I had this exact problem about 2 weeks ago.

Turns out in my case it was the controller board in the drive. Replaced and works fine now.

Mine fried because a G&E guy pulled power on my camera 3 separate times.

Unfortunately that's probably your best bet.

You mean you don't have a friend's, or neighbour's, or one at work you can use?

thanks Dave. I appreciate you replying. sure does help. I'll try a PC and if not will send to RED.

followup : RED drive mounted on a windows XP machine just fine and data was recovered. You guys think I should format drive and move on or send back to RED.

LOL, that's a hard one...

But seriously... If you have your data, reformat, do some testimages (preferrably first short, then filling the disk), try to mount...

If that works fine (a number of times) you probably hit a one-off.

If there are any problems at all... Back to RED

A friend on another shoot is having the same problem with a 640 drive. 640s most susceptible for some reason? Producer's wanted him not to do any reformats on the drive. I usually reformat at the beginning of each day if I can after I've done proper checks and transcodes (ideally footage has gone to post and is backed up there as well but a luxury not that common in commercial shoots from my experience). Sounds like the drive is about 2/3rds full. I recommended trying to mount on a Windows system.

I have seen this happen three times.

Once we were able to mount the drive on Windows and get the footage.

Two different drives, that didn't work. We had to format the drive on the camera, basically erase all the footage, then the drive mounted on the computer just fine, and use Redundead to recover the footage.

The most painful thing I have ever done on set is erase an entire drive full of footage that I could see working perfectly on the camera, so I could recover it.

This was the process Red recommended and not just some crazy idea I came up with.

Did you mount the drive on PC or Mac computer after reformatting in the camera?

Do you remember how full the drives were, and how long it had been since they had been reformatted? Was it literally "an entire drive full of footage"? And none of it was backed up? Yikes...I'd be in cardiac arrest at that point

In my case it was a half-full 640GB drive that hadn't been reformatted during 2 full days of shooting, but only the first few shots of day 3 hadn't been backed up yet, and we ended up reshooting a few things

I had a problem like this the other day, was driving me crazy. It ended up being the APC not sending enough power to the computer. Probably not specifically the issue here, but is applicable troubleshooting. Especially if you have a lot of periphs. drawing off the board.

Plugged the machine straight into the wall and mounted fine.

I have always suspected something was up with the FW Bus on Mac Pros.

Reset the SMC and make sure you're powering the drive with AC as well as FW.

According to the RED Tech i talked to, if it mounts to a windows machine it was just a file structure error. A reformat on the camera will snap it back to where it should be.

But then if you need the footage from the drive you will need to use RED Undead to rebuild the drive.

Yeah but I had the 640 RedDrive on AC power, and we tried it on 3 different computers, so no, it wasn't my UPS

Gotta love Windows sometimes!
