  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can we talk about other cameras here again?

The thing is though... people form genuine, trusting friendships on these forums and may want to ask those friends about their opinion on, say, a large frame B cam to work with their Scarlet Fixed.

The whole point of this article was that the OP didn't trust the opinions he found on the forum he had been on and, I assume, would rather discuss them, civilly, with his RED chums.
True, but the point has been made that, this is not allowed. There are other forums and there is e-mail and one can PM. Just don't clutter up this forum with threads that get in the way of the RED message. Where else can one get the RED message? The competitors would love to junk up this forum. It's like cancer, you must nip it in the bud. Keep it pure, keep it RED.

Jeff,

Anyone worth their salt who has used the tool, knows it's particular strengths. There will always be a marketplace where, when competition heats up, there will be deliberate misinformation.

The point should be that one discovers the tool and uses it to it's potential, so having discussions about RED are pertinent. If I wanted to figure out the best way to use another tool and discuss it, then that should be in a forum they provide for their tool.

I agree with you anyone who dismisses ANYTHING out of hand should raise suspicion.

Not quite accurate. The ARRI D21( and the d20 I think ) could do arriraw over T-link to approved recording devices ( s.two and codexs come to mind ).
But that's an UNCOMPRESSED raw format, which means everything that works with it is expensive OR sloooooowwwww (and we are talking 2K BTW). Herein lies the brillia of redcode which is RAW but mildly compressed, and for which red and Graeme have been granted a patent!

I'd love to see that set up on a 3 D rig.

I know. I was talking practical working tools that fit in your hand.

:)

I liked SOME of the discussions of other cameras, as REDUser had a reasonable proportion of professionals in cameras and post who compare the inevitable merits and downfalls of each.

Unfortunately, there is a rowdy, fanboyish element on here FROM BOTH SIDES, which often made the conversations degenerate into the frankly libellous.

It's a shame - I dont suppose ANY camera, even RED, is the best tool in every situation or budget.

Wait... this thread is still open?

It's RED's house, their rules.

I like talking about other cameras here, because I have a lot of respect for the users here. I've argued for that freedom before when Jim first made his announcement of rules changes.

Basically I think this community is just as qualified and more useful than CML.

When I read or write about cinematography here I learn. Even if I am talking about my POS 7D. So I think it has merit in so far as it serves the community.

Nevertheless: RED's house, RED's Rules.

Play by the rules or find another place to play.

Wow, ok... Greames and Jannards reply to this thread was enough. I don't think we needed a barrage of redundant answers slandering certain cameras again.

First of all I wasn't talking about comparing "other cameras again" to Red... I ment just comparing them to each other. Such as 7D vs. AF-100... because right now the 7D still looks 2x better in all areas besides detail and aliasing. Even the rolling shutter is the same... but DVXuser wont allow these discussions to take place. Like I said a side-by-side demo video of a 7D and AF-100 was posted, clearly showing the 7D exhibiting higher DR, and it was shut down. Anyones onion besides the moderators was discredited and the posted deleted. Any post besides "the AF-100 is the best camera ever made and DSLR's suck" is considered to be antagonizing an argument. Convenient for them.

Why we would compare DSLR's to any professional camera, I don't know. I wouldn't even compare them to prosumer cameras....

Because they look as good if not better. We can't pretend this isn't true, because it is. They defiantly aren't Red... but in my mind it's Red or 5D/7D/GH2. All other prosumer cameras simply don't look good anymore. Sure some might have pristine HD of better color space, but they just end up looking like super-high quality camcorders. The DSLRs are unique in that, besides Red/Alexa/F35, they are the only consumer video devices that, well... don't look like video. Even if the color space sucks.

Anyways, I don't know why this thread made it past the 3rd post by Greame. I wasn't even going post in it again until I saw all of these FOD post that completely miss-read my original post and started to slander cameras again. Whatever.
