  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Might you have a connection on the Hobbit?

So, most of my posts are usually me trying to help everyone else find the right answer...but this one is a 100% selfish post. Sorry. I also realize that I probably made this post a little late, as early Hobbit employment has begun.

But if anyone happens to have an "in" with the production and has any influence as far as employment goes, I'd be most obliged if you PM'd me.

I have money to immediately buy my own plane ticket to New Zealand and to settle myself in an apartment in NZ as well as other living expenses on my own and to work "as local" if I were given the chance. You don't know how overjoyed I'd be to be given a chance to work my butt off for the Hobbit production.

As for the people who feel that this isn't the proper way of getting a job, maybe you are right. But thanks for respecting me by not replying to this thread just to let me know your thoughts along those lines. You may look at my signature to see my thoughts about the matter and go onto to read another thread on the forum...

Thanks!

Joseph, if I could help... I certainly would do so.

I hope you get the opportunity!

Joseph, you never know who may be lurking on these boards. :-)

Hopefully something comes through for you. I have been more than impressed with the skill and ambition that you, Zac, and many of the other young filmmakers here at REDuser have shown. This would be an amazing opportunity for you to get on a project like that. I would think you would add value in whatever role you are able to acquire.

Joseph I wish you the best but you might be in need of a pretty a serious 'in' at the highest levels to make it happen. NZ's employment laws as I read them seemed very strict about hiring people without having exhausted all efforts to find a local alternative first or you have something like 6+ years of experience before they'll grant you a work visa.

I did a little research myself a while back when I heard that The Hobbit was going to be made. LOTR movies don't come along too many times in one's lifetime. ;)

When I was 18 (long time ago) I talked my way in to Shepperton Studios and sat outside David Lean's production office on the off chance I could hand him my CV and get a job as tea boy on his upcoming feature. I waited and waited. Waited some more. And some more. Finally, after seven hours his production manager popped out to see me. He was so impressed I'd stuck it out there for so long, that he gave me a personal tour of the studios, including their own art department and production offices. He took my details and promised me a gig.

Sadly, the film was killed by the Unions. But that didn't matter.

On the train home from the studios, I was stopped by a guard because I didn't have a ticket. I was skint. I was sixty miles from home. Naturally, I tried to talk my way out of it. I told him how I'd sat on a step outside David Lean's office for seven hours, just so I could hand him my CV. It didn't work and the guard was about to throw me off the train when an older, but not unattractive, woman in the next row of seats said she'd pay my fare. I thanked her. She asked for my CV.

It turned out she was a producer at a top ad agency. Three weeks later I got a call and a week later I was working on set.

That was the start of my career. I continued working for the woman for several years and despite all the rumors, I can honestly say I never paid her back for my rail ticket (if you get my drift).

Anyway, the moral of this story: there isn't one really, except to say that if you don't put yourself up for a fall, you cant land on your feet.

BTW I do know someone on Peter Jackson's team. From what I hear, you might be better served sitting outside Spielberg's office and with the money you've saved on your plane ticket, buy a Scarlet.

Submit an application to be an intern asap.

I'm New Zealand based and know some people who are signing on now. The trouble you would face is you would need to get a working visa first and then hit up production for a job. Without a working visa, you are very unlikely to sneak into a position even if one was available simply because production wouldn't normally take on the hassle of securing a Visa for someone who wasn't key to production.

If you want to come to New Zealand, then look into if you could get a visa to work for a year or two. If you can, and you want to try it out, then turn up and while I am not Wellington based, if you end up in Auckland you could crash at least my place for a bit :). Just bare in mind - I am sure the Hobbit will attract quite a few keen people to come over and try and blag a job on it, on top of the vast amount of locals looking for work on it, so it's going to be a crap shoot. But it's also an 18 month gig, so unlike most films it's more likely that other positions will become available over time as people come and go, so if you were in the right place at the right time, you never know.

But without a working visa sorted first I wouldn't expect anything more than a holiday.

Joseph, I know a lot of really short people, if you think that would help.

And to the others, thanks for the encouragement and the short doses of realism.

I've looked into a lot of stuff on the immigration website, as well as other websites with housing info.

Like I said in the original post, I have the money to move on my own, a strong desire to work hard, and I believe the ability to get the proper visa. The only thing I need is a willing person to take a chance on me and open a door.

Good Luck Joseph, that really would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of such an "Epic" production. I've always been amazed at what Peter Jackson did on LOTR, he really is brilliant and I look forward to seeing more of his work the Hobbit. I sincerely hope you get a stroke of luck and find a way to a job on the production.

Yup. The LOTR is/are my favorite movies. Put that with 3D EPIC's, and the chance to be immersed for 18 months of intense work, I would pay a great reward to be involved.

Shooting behind the scenes with a Scarlet would be my dream job. Of course, I'm not gonna be picky and say that that's the only job I'd do. hehe I have a servant's heart and would be happy to do pretty much anything and would give it my all. ;)

Joseph, my good friend, I wish you the best of luck.
