so i took a 7 hour hike up a very rugged mountain yesterday like i will many more times in the future with scarlet. I was planning on buying the Libec RS 250. This tripod weighs 13lbs. After taking the trip yesterday with a somewhat lightweight tripod and a panasonic gh2 i realized that a 13lb tripod is completely out of the question. what im looking for is a small setup with a good quality head on probably a set of carbon legs. from what ive read mafrotto is not going to cut it and libec has nothing in their line that will meet my needs. a tripod that can handle somewhere around 10-12 lbs would be perfect.

I need the quality, stability and smooth panning of a libec rs 250 in a tripod that weighs somewhere in the 7lb mark.

anyone got any suggestions? id be willing to spend upwards of $2000 to get a solid setup, of coarse the cheaper the better. thanks

This is the tripod I use for my still camera. Extremely light and pretty stable. Gitzo makes a bowl adapter up to 100mm which will allow you to mount a fluid head. Might not be bad for your purpose. The lack of a spreader and the way you can set the leg angles independently could work nicely on the side of a mountain.

Edit: or if you want something a little more robust you can get their 5 Series which is still damn light.

those Gitzo legs are very light for sure but they will have too much flex for panning unfortunatly. That sachtler setup is more what im looking for. although 9lbs is still pushing it weight wise. no doubt it would stand up well to the trials id put it through. I here great things about schatler.

what other options have i got?

You may not want it for mountains but you can buy spreaders for some of the Gitzo lightweights. Also you could superclamp the legs at the centre point to add stability.

But I don't really know of any really sturdy superweight legs apart from the mid weight video tripod which are usually only two or three stage tripods and quite cumbersome.
