I'm presently a Nikon owner (also a RED and future Epic owner) with a not-too-insignificant collection of lenses. I sort of had the impression that the Canon mount/adapter for Epic would be first out of the box....can anyone at RED give us a clue as to whether both will be available at the same time or not once the Epic starts shipping?

Many thanks for the feedback

Jean

Umm I definitely second that question. My collections none too shy either!

Jarred said on another thread that they are doing the Canon mount first.

My guess is that both Canon and Nikon mounts will be ready before Epic X is. Epic M is a different story.

+1 L.C. Pretty certain the Canon is first, Nikon second and that they've said they'll both be ready to ship with the production (ie. not handmade Epic-M) cameras.

I hope you are right, but we've seen conflicting info from Jarred:

On 06-02-2010, he said:
The Nikon and the Canon mounts are already done :)

But on 11-07-2010, he said in reply to the question, "Which mounts will be available for EPIC upon delivery?"
PL, Panavision, Canon. Nikon soon to follow.

As far as I know, we've never had an answer to the question of how soon. And I have to say that with Red's delivery history it worries me a bit.

David, it's possible that Jarred's comments seem in conflict because he may have been referring to the completion of setting up different lenses to work with the mounts. Apparently, they have to enable lens data for each lens made by the manufacturers.

Yes, that's a possibility, but does that mean the mount will be available, but will be effectively a dumb mount until they get the lenses profiled? And if they deliver before the profiling is done, will the mount control the aperture on G-series lenses? Or does that mean the mount won't start delivery until they get the profiling done? Or does it mean something else?

There are a lot of questions here, but those are the most basic. I have a good collection of Nikon-mount lenses that I use with my R1, and I live two states away from a rental house with PL glass. I'm lucky enough to have a low R1 serial number, but it will really suck if Epic-X arrives and it's 6 months before a Nikon mount is ready.

We'll be Canon all the way and hope that the Epic/Canon mount is out soon. Love our Birger mount/Impero combo on our M-X.

A simple (inexpensive) mechanical adapter will make the Nikon ProLock by OptiTek fully compatible with Epic/Scarlet. As soon as the specs are released or cameras accessible we'll make it ..
with ProLock you get positive locking and Iris control for all unmodified G lenses

Yeah, it would be nice to have some sort of progress report. I bought a couple of Nikon G lenses in anticipation of sticking them on the moment I take delivery of my Stage 2 camera.

I don't know how long it takes to profile each lens but if someone is being dedicated to this one job, hopefully camera and lens mount will be done about the same time. Like you, I have no PL glass and besides, would like to start and finish my (long) project using the same glass.

If you are using manual focus Nikkors you could always use mechanical Nikon F to Eos (or Contax to Eos even) adapters with the Eos Mount Epic...

The Fotodiox Pro models are my favorite because of their lower cost but high performance.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm sure the OptiTek ProLock is great, but will it be electronic? I mean this will be one of the great features of using the Nikon/Canon mounts on Epic, being able to control the lens electronically via the Redmote Pro for instance... and if I'm not mistaken, I remember the mounts from RED are supposed to cost around $500.

Well, yes I suppose that's possible, but it's kind of a kludge, and it doesn't work with all of my lenses. (The ones i bought after Jarred said the Nikon mount was finished last June.)

And then I've got to by an EOS mount, plus the adapters, then the Nikon mount when it comes available, and in the mean time I can only use my manual-iris lenses. Or if Jacek is really speedy, he can adapt my Optitek mount, then buy the electronic Nikon mount when it comes available. Or I can buy a PL mount (which I will anyway for times I need or want a big zoom or other PL glass) and eat the rental and shipping cost on lenses until the Nikon mount is ready. Any way you look at it, it's a big, expensive PIA.

I know, I know, it's my own fault for not loving the 5D. If I loved the 5D, I'd have a lot of Canon glass, and I'd be all set. Instead, I fell for the D3... well the truth is I fell for the F3 a long time ago and the beautiful 85mm 1,4, but that's more of a story than anyone is interested in hearing. I think I'm going to have to learn the Zen of patience once again.

OK, I'm done whining now. It'll all be beautiful when it's all done.

electronics in ProLock

electronics in ProLock

I must say that the Nikon ProLock by OptiTek , is by far the Best Nikon mount there is out there, Jacek did a great job on this mount.

Thanks Ketch,
always much appreciated

This is an option for iris control on G lenses and positive locking.
I don't think electronic implementation will be too hard- I would just install the contacts and wire them correctly as all processing is done by camera anyway.
I also have some optical surprises in store for Epic ProLock.
Getting the electronics through Red approval is another story- they've had some terrible experiences with poorly and/or incorrectly wired third party accs and, therefore, are not very forthcoming with approvals- understandably so...
