Do RED have any development targets for the first stable version of REDCINE-X? I'm also wondering what tools the big boys use for grading RED footage for feature films, they wouldn't use the still buggy REDCINE-X would they?

I think there's a misunderstanding here: RCX is not for final grading, it's for testing grading on set or pre-grading to prepare your material for editing and see if it holds well with your stylistic decisions. Plus delivering pre-graded offline versions and re-conforming after the edit, preparing looks for the camera and rendering different high-quality formats for the next steps.

But final grading is normally done after editing on a dedicated system with more possibilities and more elegant handling than RCX. Apple's Color might be the cheapest one, but I think BM's DaVinci Resolve will kill it with it's speed and quality for the insanely low price. In particular in version 7.1 with a few GPU's and a Rocket it's very fast.

And then there are Scratch, SpeedGrade, Quantel, just to mention a few…

My god, you're fast! Didn't even finish writing ;-)

The latest alpha version of RC-X is so far stable functional and fast on my two year old Core2 duo laptop. They are getting there.

stable here too, crunshed through 1000 clips without a crash over the last day.
(but i am not transcoding more than 100 clips at once)

still dont get what storm offers over r-x, can someone explain?
i sync in the NLE and from there it goes usually to grading and protools without going back to rx.

in my experience it can be critical to add clips to the export batch while transcoding - doing so I can produce crashes from time to time, especially when I'm clicking around too much (but I can't really reproduce it or nail it down)... Anyways - it's getting better and better with every new build so far!

Let Red support know - they can only chase issues if people report them!

Hi Tom,

If you are having issues, why haven't we heard from you? Have you tried 356?
Is there a specific issue you are encountering? We take issues very seriously, and will try to resolve any specific problem asap.

Thanks Peter,

If you can nail it down, please shoot me an email.
In the meantime we'll try and reproduce.

if you are talking about onlining and color grading, redcine x is not the intended software to do these tasks.

look at
davinci resolve for mac
assmilate scratch
iridias speedgrade
baselight
filmmaster
Lustre

all of them do handle red grading jobs in a very good way, they are build for theses task and can handle a red workflow.
software is going from low to mid to high budget.

Brook, Zach and I are using RCX on a high profile feature right now and it's wonderful.

Deanan, Matt, David and the rest of the RCX team deserve a special shout out for all their hard work.

Thanks everyone for clarifying the role of REDCINE-X, and pointing me towards some of the other grading tools out there. Quite helpful.

Uli is right

And... really, it's been a while since RCX randomly crashed...

Crashed on me numerous times when I was grading that Scarlet footage of Felix. Lost a lot of grade's I was happy with; normally crashed when trying to get them out of REDCINE-X. I eventually worked out how to save grade's (should have done that to begin with), so didn't lose any more work after that, despite a couple more crashes.

I just assumed that REDCINE-X was still in heavy development, and that the latest builds were known to be buggy, hence I haven't bothered. But if you are really trying to get this thing stable as soon as possible, I can be sure to report any problems I encounter. Just tell me where to report them.

Do you also want suggestions? I'm quite passionate about user interface design, and so would love to make a couple of suggestions for REDCINE's user interface.

Tom,

You are using 356E right?

The Epic versions of RCX are still experimental, as is Scarlet footage. I'm not surprised you are seeing crashes. That being said, it's been stable on our end.

You can send a log file to redcinex at red dot com. Please make sure verbose logging is enabled and also include a description of what you are seeing.

Now a note regarding all versions of RCX: RCX is under constant development. We have a backlog of features so long I can't describe it. The newest builds always get pushed out to RedUser first, for feedback. Stable builds go up on the support site. Look to the support site first for stable builds. The current one is 356. 356E is different!!

By all means share your suggestions. We love getting feedback, and take all suggestions into consideration.

Cheers,
David
