I am trying to decide which of these programs to buy for my data management setup.

What do you guys recommend?

Thank you!

I have used R3Data for the last few years and have not had any issues with it. I am a DOP and can setup a laptop at the start of a day then with R3Data manager I know that the footage has been copied correctly as the cam assist only has to plug and plug drives after seeing the big green tick indicating a good transfer.

Its very easy to use and has never et me down.

Cheers, Tim.

Obviously Im a bit biased, but I developed R3D Data Manager because there is nothing else like it in the space. Something, that as described above, does proper data copy and verification in zero clicks.

There are various reasons I dont like ShotPut Pro, but the most important one to me is the method of verification used. It does a read-back method, meaning that it reads the destination against the source and compares them. That sounds fine until you delete the originals, as you must eventually do with Red Media. Now there is no way to re-verify any material again. R3D Data Manager makes use of stored checksums to ensure that the data is exactly as the original. I know today that the material I shot in August 2007 is exactly as the camera originally wrote it, because of the stored checksums. It is impossible to guarantee that level of verification or completeness using ShotPut Pros method.

R3D Data Manager is (mostly) great for R3Ds, but separate audio files need to be backed up too, so IMHO, you need both programmes at the moment.

I use a triple action deal for copying files.

r3dm for R3d obviously
shotput for all other mediums, sxs, p2, other CF cards, all that stuff.
and when i clone drives for a backup i use super duper as that does checksum verification too.

all the programs do take up more time in offloading and copying, so it's hard to use and justify to a producer on why it's taking longer. but for integrity of the footage I always try to use all three as much as I can.

Thank you everyone. All this advice is much appreciated. I've meant to download and work with r3dm. It looks like a fantastic program. Just wanted to check first. Thank you again.

I also see more SD card data transfer on my horizon so I might have to get ShotPut as well.

So it looks more like I will have to have both programs.

Will there be an update to R?3D Data Manager?
It doesn't work with a the thunderbolt Sonnet Enclosure under 10.7.4 on a retina MBPro and I'm assuming the App needs to be updated with thunderbolt or some newer tech to navigate the buses. is that going to happen?

After some contact with Conrad it seems I had a driver conflict that was undocumented with the H680. downgraded the driver and no issues.
Def NOT an issue with R3D DM but with Hardware.

Which mentions a Shotput Red edition which does not exist. Did it?

BTW, if any vendors are reading, it would be nice if we could enter metadata in the programs.

Hope you folks are having fun,
Robert:-)
