  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED - A Look Back

The 1st RED "Spec Day" was Dec. 13th, 2005. We had no sensor design and no industrial design. We got a small group together to talk about what exactly this camera should be. The "GO" decision was made within a few days of this meeting. So RED officially committed to building a camera in December of 2005.

A few months later we exhibited at NAB 2006 with mock-ups and took $1000 deposits thinking we could deliver by the end of the year. This was the beginning of "always late but worth the wait".

In March of 2007 we went to New Zealand to visit Peter Jackson with "Boris" and "Natasha", the very 1st RED ONEs. Peter and his team shot "Crossing the Line" in three days and delivered the files to us one day before NAB 2007 opened. The wait averaged just over an hour to see it at our booth and the line was packed from open to close of every day.

Steven Soderbergh saw "Crossing" and committed to shooting "Ché" on prototype RED ONEs beginning summer 2007... several months before actual production began.

It took until August 2007 to release the 1st cameras for sale.

Jim

Well, Happy belated 5th Birthday RED!

Jim, thanks for posting this as well as the early photos.
I'd love to see some more "behind the scenes" shots of the early days!

I was more interested in RED than Apple.

Jim

if my math serves me right, it took only about 1.5 years, to revolutionize the film industry. including the first sit down...!

the word "late" does not quite fit into that time frame. this is not slow, or late, but only damn fast. maybe not as fast as you had hoped, but this is damn fast - did I just repeat myself?

...do I have to bow down AGAIN? ;)

NAB Booth - April 2006

It looks like a group that are collectively thinking "If only the world knew what will soon be coming from this little tent..."

And then, proof of how visionary Jim and Co are...see the "HD for all" on the plastic bag. It's more like 4K RAW for all... :001_tongue:

Here's a few more I was able to track down:

Enjoy...

Thanks for that! I have 1000s of shots of the RED early days, but very few with me in them!

I have the feeling that a fair few people passing through the RED tent at that first NAB thought we were off our rockers!

haha... is that a chrome ball or a magic crystal ball in front of you guys there?

Great idea for a thread Casey...

I heard about Jim's dreams for Red directly from Jim in mid-2005. My reaction to Jim was "Way cool! I think you should do it!"

I was one of the invited attendees to that first Red "Spec Day" (12/13/05) at Oakley headquarters that Jim mentioned earlier in this thread, where we all think-tanked ideas for the new Red camera which would become Red One. It was a great experience being at that big table between Jim and Graeme, and offering input to the group.

Those who've been following Red since the beginning will remember that I was the writer of all of the original TV/film trade magazine articles that unveiled the plans for the Red cameras, including the first magazine published interview with Jim about Red (4/20/06), a short profile of Red at Cine Gear (6/27/06), breaking the media news of the newest Red developments at NAB 2007 (4/16/07), an article about the world's first Red 3D production (9/5/07), and other articles. Here are some links to some of those articles I wrote:

I was one of the guys at the very first Red Day on 8/31/07, receiving the first of my four Red One cameras - Red 0008

I co-produced, in the first week of December 2007, the L.A. Red Test (LART) event that Casey posted the photos of. I'm not in those group photos - I probably took them for other people using their cameras. The LART team me and Ken Corben selected is now like a "Who's Who" of prominent Red User members and moderators. BTW, Casey was one of those who were invited and contributed. Side note: In the shot at LART Casey posted you'll notice I'm shooting without an LCD. We didn't have enough LCD's to go around for the four-Red camera short we were shooting, so I let someone else use mine, and shot the high cover shots of the action by simply sighting down the outside of the lens barrel (Red 50-150), and estimating the distance for focus. It worked, the footage came out good, and it was cut into the short.

As you might guess I took a lot of photos at those early Red events. Some day I'll dig them out and post some.

Thanks to Red giving me the opportunity to buy Red 0008, in 2007 I was fortunate to achieve (or co-achieve) many Red camera firsts: first 3D production, first underwater and water surface, first aerials, first use of B4 2/3" HD EFP/ENG zooms, first multi-Red sports production, and many other firsts.

In reality, I'm just one of the many people, inside Red and outside, who contributed heavily to the early formation and development of Red. I'd like to give a huge thanks to my longtime friend Jim Jannard for giving me the chance to contribute to the early years of Red - and I'm still here, still contributing, and just as stoked as ever about Red products :)

It was an award we won at that first NAB!

And here's a great one:

Taken by Ted of me when we first fired up Boris and Natasha and they worked!!!

hahaha! love it. and that is a very cool award... i still contend it's actually a magical crystal ball.

We were pretty gobsmacked to get it because we just showed up with a tent and a promise, and a rather nicely machined metal prototype with a lens on the front....

Graeme

Ah Graeme, I see you are a connoisseur of fine single malts... good man. Jim was on about the coffee fund for tired RED trouble shooters and technicians the other day. You shall have to let us know what the correct address is to send up some "burnt offerings" to. Taylors of Harrogate coffee would definitely cause serious murmurs of approval in the ranks, but the real question is: Peaty Islay's or the more mellow Speysiders?

Thanks for that! I have 1000s of shots of the RED early days, but very few with me in them!

You're welcome, Graeme. I believe those were taken by Mike Curtis.

Great idea for a thread Casey...

Thanks, Steve. (And thanks again for organizing and inviting me to LART way back when). :-)

Yes, please do upload some of your photos when you get the chance.

LOL

So where all us crazy fanboys following that from afar... -:)

Remember it as way cool, though.
