Just wanted to start a thread about Canon EF-S still lenses on 5K mx sensors. In particular I think the main issue is vignetting.

From David Mullens post the 5K mx is 30 x 15mm
From wikipedia aps-c sensors range from 20.7×13.8 mm to 28.7×19.1 mm

The main EF-S lens I'm interested in is the 17-55/2.8 (but by all means please add others), does anyone know its image circle?
If sometime in the future I rented or borrowed an s35, would I face vignetting?

I would also like to know this.

Would the Tokina 11-16 vignette as well on RED's S35 sensor?

image circle for tokina, 38-32 mm. it will cover epic at all focal lengths. I would say that most if not all canon ef-s should cover epic easily. Most modern lenses cover within the 30 mm range.

It would be nice if the folks with EPIC-Ms could test this for us.

I'm planning on getting a 60D and a couple of EF-S lenses until EPIC-S is out.

Mark/ Offhollywood made a valid point a month or so ago when her pointed out that many people are trying to put PL glass on DSLR's and putting still lenses on RED's.
If you can afford an EPIC you would certainly not want to bother with EFs lenses. However I made this thread back when the scarlet 5k s35 brain was priced at $7000.
What is it now? Circa ~$12k for EPIC-s? I think it is still a viable option then to use a rented EPIC-s with a canon 17-55 efs.
But I can't say I've fallen in love with any of the other EFs lenses. Even the 10-22 is out shined by the tokina.
Provided it doesn't vignette the 17-55/2.8 plus rented EPIC-s could be a great way for 2/3 shooters to supplement their footage with 5k shots when needed.
The mtf charts are up there with the L series link and the focal length range is perfect for narrative.

I wouldn't be concerned about any EF-S, Nikon DX, or any other APS-C lenses not working on any of RED's cameras. Super 35 is essentially 16:9 cropped from a 4:3 35mm full frame, so is the case for cropped lenses versus their full frame counterparts. Anything out there that is above the 4/3 sensor standard size should by all technical means work on a RED One, Epic, Epic-lite (Scarlet), etc. sensor at 4K and above. However, once you step down to 2K mode, then you have the option to experiment with smaller format lenses, often the example is Super 16mm and 16mm lenses, but at the cost of overall resolution.

Additionally, once RED breaks into the full frame market, any and all full frame lenses will work as well but, if you decide to go with cinema lenses, you have to be sure to check if the cinema lens is meant for S35 or Full Frame as this information is sometimes not clearly or expressly stated.

RED isn't looking to make these cameras as a compromise with new custom standards and measurements, they're designing them to follow long standing industry standards that every cinematographer has known and worked with for generations. Flexibility is one of the key fundamental goals of the RED system, that's why they offer still lens mounts as an option. If they have a Canon mount, it will be designed to work with every Canon lens out there and the same goes for any other still lens mount they design.

If you can afford an EPIC you would certainly not want to bother with EFs lenses.

I strongly disagree with that.

Since we don't currently know EPIC-S's pricing, there's a chance that there might be a lot of people who can somehow manage to scrap the necessary dough to get the most basic shooting package.

This crowd will surely shoot with SLR lenses.

Even someone who buys a more complete EPIC-S package might not have the money to own PL glass, just rent.

Please note I said EFs lenses not EF lenses. If you take a look at the line up the EF-s lenses are very much aimed at the consumer with the 17-55/2.8 and the 10-22 being the only exceptions (and maybe the 60 efs macro). If you are scraping money together you are far better of getting nikon manual AIs than the rest of the ef-s line.
edit:
actually I really should have named the thread "5k and 17-55/2.8" not "5k and efs" because nearly all the other ef-s lenses are very very sub-par.

Im consider to buy 24mm and 35mm f/1.4 L lenses. This is why:
1. No breathing while focusing
2. They are color matched
3. very short manual focus, BUT they have great motor/algorithm and EPIC have EF mount.
4. Outstanding picture on croped sensor, and this is the main point why im posting this. Its very expensive and hard to have great picture on edge of lens picture. Just buy Full Frame and leave the CA and vigneting to part on outside of sensor.

We absolutely love the Canon L-series glass on our M-Xed RED One, and will use this glass with an Epic if we decide to go that route, as well.

Our favorite lenses are the 35mm f1.4, the 50mm f1.2, and the 85mm f1.2. We shot 95% of our second film with just those three lenses alone.

The Tiger shot I posted yesterday was shot with a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L . The Autofocus and Stabilization on Epic with the Canon mount is incredible.. It is a mainstay on my own EPIC.

85mm 1.2 and the 70-200 2.8 are my two favorites...

So...

If you were to throw a wide and standard in the mix, what would it be?

Hi Jarred, merry christmas!
Will the RED canon mount also be able to mount the ef-s 17-55mm f2.8 IS?
(I ask because I know the physical design of the ef-s mounts will prevent it from being mounted to a a standard EF mount)

Can the RED canon mount be used with the 2/3 interchangeable to mount the tokina 11-16/2.8 and the canon efs 17-55/2.8 IS?
(these two zooms with a wide mini prime would be pretty cool)

edit:
even if the 17-55 did vignette, you might theoretically be able to shoot 4.5k on EPIC. I'm excited about that range with AF and IS.

What I'm really looking for is a reasonably wide zoom lens for use with the EPIC.

Probably a quality SLR lens, around the 1K range.

Like the 15-55 2.8 EF-S or the Canon 28-70 2.8

Problem is the 28-70 is going to have a significant crop on EPIC.

I'd love to get the RED 17-50, but it´s out my range ATM.

17-55 IS from Canon is fantastic. It sounds like it'll cover and it performs extremely well.

.. thats kind of why I started this thread. It's the only EFs I'm interested in.
However I'm waiting for RED to confirm that it can mount to the red/canon mount.

I've said this a few times in other posts but the second gen IS on the 70-200 II is unbelievably good on RED with Birger mount. 24-70 is not really one of my favorites but there is no choice in that zoom range unless the 17-55 EF-S is considered. All the primes are better than zooms as usual and a great set can be had for cheap (comparatively) if you stick to L series plus the 11-16.
