  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$999 for the new APPLE 27" Cinema Display!! Happy I sold all my 30" Screens ;)

I'm convinced that there is a funky issue with the mini adapter. When I use it on my 13" MBP uni the colour profiles have to match perfectly or it crashes FCP. When I use my old 17" MBP with a full size cable, no issues at all. Have found this on 3 new unibodies.

I haven't looked at monitors in a while. What are the closest direct competitors to this & how do they match up?

**EDIT**
Just read this:
"The LED Cinema Display gives you more than video — it gives you audio, too. The built-in 49-watt speaker system includes an integrated subwoofer that delivers immersive, full-range sound for music, movies, and games."

Where do they stick a sub in that case?

Marketing BS.

Low frequency sounds require speaker with a large(r) membrane plus a box volume for a bass to resonate. Don't expect phenomenal bass and music enjoyment from miniature hidden speakers. I also wouldn't take "49 watts" seriously.

So you man to say that when the 30" was connected and now to be 27" to the 17" MBP, we don't get the full rez out of the Cinema Displays??

Sorry Ketch, I didn't mean to confuse. You still get full resolution. The new 27" is a 16:9 display and the old 30" is 16:10. They are both the same width and horizontal resolution, but with the new model having a different aspect ratio, it is only 1440 pixels tall instead of 1600.

If it is a newer unibody 17" MBP you won' have any problems.

Yes I do, and that was my understanding by reading the specs.

Hehe, yeah I tough so, and yes what I meant to say was not that I was getting the same resolution as the 30" offered, but the same resolution as in the full resolution offered by the new Monitor.

BTW Jeff, I might call upon your well documented knowledge as to assist me in building my new Tower for the new Studio in Italy, and thinking of putting Double Rockets ;)

i really wish they left out the speakers and subwoofer. This appears to be a professional monitor, why would you add in little gimiky things like that. Anyone buying a $1000 monitor is going to be using it in a environment where these speakers wouldnt be acceptable. The only place i see them being of use is in a quick edit comp on rollers, if u know what i mean.

hmmm, 700 bucks more and u get a nice computer, the imac 27in

Must be for macbook pro users who want to plug in the display and run in clamshell mode.
Saves them having to use speakers on the notebook which would be muffled by the display.

Maybe you would prefer studio monitors or something but I think there may be a market of people to whom the built in monitor speakers will be sufficient.
screenwriters, producers maybe hipsters who knows.

Apple Cinema Display 30"

Apple Cinema Display 30"

has anyone used an 30" with the REDRocket BOB via HDMI?
were currently running HDMI into a Sony 50" FWD-50PX2.
using the above set-up, were getting screen tears at play-back.
funny thing is that if we turn on PSF it looks with one bug...cant play more than 300 frames (RED tech is aware).
I tested the same set-up on my 3D workstation Dell U2711 and its a beaut.
However Im not giving up that display without full compensation ;)

I wouldn't trade my 30" Matte ACD for 2 GLOSSY 27" ACDs. I already have a good mirror when I need one. :)

Hehe, since we use our 27" in dark rooms and no front end lighting, but back lighted dark walls, the 27" is far
superior to the older 30", and its LED illumination is also far stronger and better, and does not get HOT ever
with a much lower power consumption, allowing for a longer run time duration, while on set powered by
portable Battery Packs, or Battery generators !!

But yes when anything with lights comes in the front of it, it is highly reflective,
and on Set must be used with a Hood, and or inside the Village Blackout Black Tent.

I was just teasin' Ketch. But you are right, in that environment the 27" is superior. My new 55" TV in our family room has the same reflection problem in the daytime but it looks MUCH better than the old 55' in the dark. What we all need is something in between "semi-gloss"! ;)

In fact, typing this on my iPad right now I can see myself and everything behind me! It's good in case someone sneaks up on me though. Hah.
