Excerpt aken from the latest press release @ /film:

"it’s the first 3D movie shot with 35mm lenses and full-35mm chip cameras; and it’s the first movie to record uncompressed HD Video to Hard Drive."

In other news, I've got the best industry professionals together and have created the world's first 4K Digital Cinema Company and we're the only people committed to RAW recording.

Why would you even need full-35mm chip cameras to record uncompressed HD video? Isn't scaling down from the native 35mm chip sensor to HD a severe form of "throwing out raw data" in and of itself?

You are comparing apples and oranges, the sensor SIZE versus the pixel resolution. A 35mm sized sensor can be HD resolution. HD isn't a physical size but 35mm is.

I don't think it was the first film to record uncompressed HD to hard drive because I'm pretty sure thats how 'Russian Ark' was shot as well as I believe Zodiac.
But this stuff about being the first 3D movie to use 35mm sensor and lenses, I think thats probably true, not sure what 4k and raw has to do with it but it was shot on Sony F35 which is a super 35mm sensor.
Other digital 3D films have been shot on 2/3rds inch sensors.

Russian Ark was shot on a Sony F900 and Zodiac was shot on Viper. Both of those cameras have 2/3 inch sensors.

Except of course My Bloody Valentine 3D which was shot on RED in 3D.
So, 35mm lenses and sensor used on a 3D film released January 2009 - nearly 2 years before Tron.

They also use the phrase "full-35" which suggests full frame, but that's not correct either.

Benjamin Button also recorded uncompressed HD from Viper - albeit not for the whole film.

So that press release is indeed total BS from start to finish.

The fraise "Total BS" I think is too harsh, more like extremely loose with the facts.
phrases like full 35 are pretty loose as well, they seem to mean different things to different people.
It's like "3D" it's not really "3D" It's Stereo, to me 3D always signified 3D animation but now Stereo is "3D".

stereo is not 3D just because people say it is. there's no reason we should go along with it. i'm sorry, it just really irks me to hear terms misused like that.

Except of course the only "fact" in the press release is the film's title. Everything else is factually inaccurate - at least in terms of being first. So I have no problem calling it bs, because to me it absolutely is.

Maybe this was discussed extensively already, but how is proper use of stereo not 3D? I guess I could understand the argument, and agree, if it is that for it to be proper 3D it would have to be a hologram where if you moved your head you could see around object. Then it would be stated that stereo gives the illusion, or a representation of one POV with it's perceived 3D. Well, other than the focal lengths being different from human eyes, etc.

Perhaps what they mean is that "Tron Legacy" is the first 3-D movie to be shot uncompressed w/ a S35 sensor? Just seems more like vague copy editing than anything else. To be more specific, don't most people still see S35 as "full-35mm?" And couldn't it be implied that "first movie" is referring to 3-D movies?

I guess I just don't see the hard foul here, FWIW.

3D = three dimensional
stereo- ... greek, meaning "solid" or "three-dimensional"
stereopsis = process in visual perception leading to the perception of depth
Stereoscopy = any technique capable of recording three-dimensional visual information

You're using release dates. The post process for a picture like Tron is very , very long. My guess is that the live action was shot at least 2 to 2 1/2 years ago, predating anything you're talking about.

MBV3D was released in January of '09 a full 3 months before Tron started shooting. So Tron was released just over a year and a half from first roll.
