  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How did YOU afford your RED One?...

Down payment for a house, or buy a Red... guess which one I did...

Yup...

This thread is encouraging. From what I understand Jim started out with an idea, modest resources, high expectations and most importantly the drive to make it happen.

I suspect many here can relate, and because that's the way of Jim, that's the way of RED, and that's why we're here.

I know I am.

Robert, I figured there are more than a few with similar stories.

And to add to my story.... Mine was also acquired thru the love and support of my dear, loving and supporting wife who left soon after her temporarily giving up our dream of a home for something most would not understand.

Scott. I remember. Read your PM please.

Started saving right when I put down the $1k. Luckily got a job in post production for a solid year that paid for the whole thing. Biggest purchase I ever made. I had the choice between paying off all my student loans at USC or the camera. I went camera.

I bought an Eyemo 35. I sold that and bought an Arri 2C. I sold the 2C and bought an Arri 35-3. I kept it for ten years. I sold my Arri 3 and bought the RED ONE. Up next, EPIC!

Saved up $35K over two years living on Ramen noodles. Basically lots of hard work and sacrifice.

Made $17K back on one rental and the rest by the end of the first year. Doubled my investment the next year. Eventually sold my R1 body for $7K more than I paid -- the benefits of getting in early.

Now I have two Epics on order...

We mortgaged our future by ripping money out of our retirement funds. What could be stupider? How about doing the very same thing to finance our two features?

Anyone wanna buy a pencil?

:-(

Saved for 17 months only to find when I went to put our order in a few months ago that the base price had jumped overnight (literally) from $17.5K to to $25K because the MX upgrade program had gone faster than expected and there were now only new MX bodies available.

Cried a lot that night but then went hunting for used bodies the next day. Got a brilliant deal at almost our original budget which included the EVF and LCD, 2 Red Drives and various accessories like zacuto mounts etc.

In hindsight, the forced purchase of a used RED was a real blessing as I was able to get the proper red screen and EVF a (had been planning to use only a cheap LCD screen with a new body).

Camera and sensor perfect, drives perfect.... couldn't be happier.

Driving 12 year old cars and not being fussed with having the most expensive future rust bucket parked on one's drive really helps...

Yeah - I have zero interest in cars and I don't drink alcohol. These two things can add up.

An aquaintance of mine, stepping into his Escalade/environmental rape machine that cost probably $40K told me he was amazed at how much our camera kit cost. "That's a lot to spend on a camera." he said, with a straight face.

My Sony EX3 paid for itself AND my Red One. :001_smile:

For this reason, you should be very careful not to discount the PMW-F3L.

Having a malleable raw image to manipulate in post is a truly amazing thing, but some clients will demand a quick and easy post workflow instead.

In my opinion, the way to kill Sony is to simply offer both.

I can count on one hand how many times I have drank alcohol. I have also never owned a car for environmental reasons. I think there probably will be an EV coming out in the next couple years that I will be interested in, but even then I will have to wait a few more years to buy it used.

The auto industry is ripe for a technological revolution. Not that I see one coming soon, but you just know if someone working in their garage comes up with a new extremely efficient way to power cars and trucks, they will be a billionaire in about two weeks.

@Rob, we spoke a number of times on the phone last year and if you remember where I was living at the time you'll know that I'm with you on the people who have overpriced status symbols yet don't see the forest for the trees because their SUV is parked in the way!

It's encouraging to hear all the different ways people are achieving their goals. I have a whole new set of them as I restructure my life, and this thread is really helping me refocus and channel my thinking in a constructive way.

2.5 years ago during boomtime, we were able to get GE Capital/Leasing to do a custom lease for the system, which we waited on the (then) list for. Took about 18 months but paid it off through rentals, operator and DIT work as well as just general production work of all shapes and sizes with and without RED rental fees.

Today that same lease would be nearly impossible to get given the change in the credit markets, but I'd probably do credit card/loans, knowing now that I can make money with it successfully.
