  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CF-card data rates enough for Epic?

Concerning the discussion about using SSDs or CF-Cards I´d like know if the use of the CF-cards is fairly future-proof. For example: Can I record 120 fps with 4-5k at RC 28-42? (or what would be the maxium?)
By the way: Does anybody knows the transfer rates of the RED CF Cards?

Thanx
Thomas.

the max read speed of the 16gb CF cards that I've gotten through esata is a bit under 100MB/s

I would count on red migrating towards SSDs for price/performance reasons.

I don't think anybody outside of RED really knows the maximum. But, I seriously doubt you will get more than about 30fps of 5K at RC28 on a 16GB card. That is a lot of data.

Roughly to SSD...

5K 24fps at 3:1 or greater... (recommend 5:1)
5K 48fps at 6:1 or greater...
5K 60fps at 8:1 or greater...
5K 72fps at 9:1 or greater...
5K 96fps (or 120fps 2.40:1) at 12:1

With similar cropfactors and compression rates as the R1, I guess you would get similar framerates to CF on the Epic. Which doesn't hold a lot of promise for decent 5k recording.

But this is just guesswork... And I guess not very many will know, as I have a hard rime seeing why one would not choose ssd for Epic...

Shooting 5K at 120fps to an SSD the size of a chocolate bar is quite the miracle. Please compare to anything else ever made in the history of this industry.

The fact that it is RAW and not an RGB codec is the icing on the cake...

Jim

Not exactly sure of the question... but obviously the compression ratios improve as the resolution goes down. The math is easy...

Sorry... It's late. I'll try the math tomorrow.
2nd part of the question was meant to be: if 16:9 is the shooting format, will there be an option to shoot the full sensor height, making it about 4.5k? Or will options jump down from 5k to 4k?
I can imagine that full-sensor height shooting may be my default choice for 16:9, if available.

I totally agree. EPIC is a tool for professionals. They can afford and should use SSDs.
