  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Fixed in March? Landed?

It's funny to be looking back in hindsight...when we were hoping to see this "3K Scarlet" for sale at NAB2008.

Funny that we have not learned mastering the art of "wait". Now its coming, or maby now!!!, naah thats not it, perhaps now!! wrong again. But now I must say Scarlet Fixed feels very close;)
:lipsrsealed:

I'd like to buy my first pro camera, a Scarlet, sometime this summer...June-July or August...anytime in that range would be great for me personally.

If I have a working cam in my hands by August 1st say, I'll be fully satisfied.

I'm really itching for it to drop first half of 2011. I can't stand shooting with my 7D anymore and I've been looking to make the jump to a pro level cam for a while now.

Yes, it is almost ..... A lot of things were done more than was needed. Things are also a bit mixed around, the HDR is one point, so much over a simple old low end feature. I have seen a picture in the news section (waiting to be read), and basically the quality is not what I expected either. Planet 82 (I think that was the name) and Omron had good quality performance for security (and car cameras for Omron) a few years back. I lead suggestions for a firmware upgrade to enable HDR on the existing sensor by simple dual frame separately timed readout. From the streaks and pin point lighting on the sample picture, it looks like this maybe what is happening from the dual separately timed exposures (there are ways around this, image processing for top resolutions, closing the exposure difference where possible, and for lower resolutions different exposure for odd or even pixels (alternating on successive lines probably). Actually Steve over at the competition SI, suggested emulating dual slope HDR with dual exposure years ago (2004/05) for the old camera projects at dvinfo, and this dual exposure problem was what I told him would be the problem, but it is better than not have HDR. So this HDR is a little thing with a unproportionally big benefit. The rest is marketing.

Quality has been an issue with HDR and big fat quality performance sensors like those that top companies need this less, but Omron (27 stops with color constancy) and the Planet technologies finally achieved quality.

We didn't need a mini-epic (no pun intended) but the next clear step over the competition at a good price. That was 3K in 2006, 4K in 2009. Not even raw was needed (when they get 4K mpeg 2/4 then give them raw and/or 3D at 4K). A clear step ahead all the time can clobber their sales, as they have to bring artificially "high end" features down to the low end market to compete, probably not enough to be in step. A much simpler and faster to market camera. One or two cameras (If you wanted a stills camera) would have been sufficient enough.

Now, another article I have in the background to read, has something about a 4K consumer camera from JVC, and Ambarella that produces chips for sub $100 cameras has a 4mp p30 chip, and I expect a camera with it (and maybe 3D) for around $700- soon enough. Scarlet will likely be clearly better than any of these, but undoubtedly pro-sumer versions will sway. A clear step will be 4K/4K 3D, depending on the competition (a camera most normal professional/semi-professional/enthusiasts would clearly desire over the competition). 3K is an outdated clear step, as I predicted years ago by now.

Thanks, I look forward to see it anyway and look forward to buying one.

Another problem is, a correct month so I can arrange finance. March, April etc, probably, does not help much, this has been hurting for years.

I've just read the article, pretty much as expected.

Just keeping my fingers crossed for this year.

Since there will be a "fixed" scarlet kit, does anyone know if there will also be an interchangeable kit as well?

I know it is the holidays, but for a while I notice an absence of response. So, I think we might possibly hear something before NAB. As they have given up on the "consumer" market we might forget CES, Mac world would be unusual, so I think Feb or March might be an initial pre-NAB release date. I must say, I really want 4K fixed for footage and photos.

so get a used R1

or and Epic-S

if it was as easy as changing the number from 3 to 4 it would have been done.

I agree with Wayne. They should go with 4K 2/3" Scarlet. Canon already demoed a 2/3" 4K prototype. 3K Scarlet is going to look dated very quickly.

RedONE or EPIC-S doesn't make sense for everybody. Some people want a 2/3" sensor.

O.K. I am anxious to get my hands on Fixed Scarlet as next Redhead! But I also beleive that RED is is known to reword our waiting with improved characteristics. I am betting it will be the case this time as well. Go RED make it better even if it means waiting!

What is the estimated cost of the Epic-S? And it does it do auto focus?
