  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Light Iron's iPad Dailies System joins Red#0031 on Set

Directors Corey Creasey and Ian Kibbey got a huge treat today on set as roger from Light Iron showed up at call time with his lighting in a Pelican case. Called the LIVEPLAY, this system is, simply put, AWESOME!

The whole thing fits in a small pelican gun case and includes a laptop, a wireless router, a couple of teradeks, a couple of iPads and some BnC cable.

i am sure it has been described here before, but if you missed it, LIVEPLAY will take the record queue from the camera and start ingesting and transcoding the take on the fly, finishing the process 5 seconds after the camera has cut. then it sends the encoded file through the freakin air to the waiting iPads. once the take hits the iPads it populates the LIVEPLAY interface and is ready for viewing.

The directors, client, agency, wardrobe, makeup, camera dept, script supervisor or whom ever can then playback that take to their hearts content. while watching it they can take notes, click the ui pre-populated edit decision fields (good take, bad take...) all in the comfort of their directors chair.

Ian and Corey simply love it and their producer david lambert from Terry Timely from san francisco was blown away at the amount of time it saved us on set as these guys had all the footage from the day literally at their finger tips.

I will include a couple of clips below of Ian at the controls. I think in the near future when this is made available for purchase or license it will be a must have for busy DIT's.

Agreed. Amazing technology. Wasn't it last week that Michael Cioni showed 23 iPads running at the same time, each with their own unique links? Incredible. Thanks for sharing about it.
 
I'm still curious about when you set priority for Tags. The makeup dept and Director or Producer may have conflicting tags, how do you set priority over-ride or grouping. With up to 23 iPads setting tags just curious how it's managed.

michael will have to chime in on that. i do believe specific depts have access only to their respective areas...so that should minimize your issue.
 
LiVEPLAY Server is a sister-application that drives the iPad integration.
Using the UI of LiVEPLAY Server, the permissions can be set to insure no one can over-write each other's comments. You can also control who can view what and even if people can edit or not edit. There are control permissions for which clips are enabled for which user, watermarking tags, deletion permission, notation control, etc.
LiVEPLAY server is the control that also enables XML, CSV, and PDF exporting of the metadata. So you can setup your users names, passwords, and security options for complete control of numerous iPads from one source, organize all the metadata tags and then export them for use in pre-existing databases or even NLEs.

thank you for clarifying that...so i walk into the house that we are shooting in and Ian one of the directors is with the agency producer, well away from the set and the client with his liveplay iPad going over takes...it was beautiful. one day and it is already an integral tool in his arsenal.

Nice to see it's a robust app. Stoked to try it out.

The guys at Terry Timely(Corey and Ian ) are great directors .
You should see some of the old projects they pulled from the original site killer work.
Some of the funniest shorts back from 2007.
 
This is great news! I have been watching this closely and I am glad to hear this system is functioning on actual shoots. I think those guys at Light Iron are really stepping it up. Thanks Michael :)
 
Will be stoked to hear when we can get hold of this software. Any hardware specifics? Ie; will it run on any mac laptop? Will we need a specific router?
 
it runs off a laptop..i am not sure what else, but the config they brought was a laptop!
 
That's pretty amazing! I wanted to know if Michael had any plans of licensing and selling liveplay as a system?

Thanks again Dino for giving Light Iron the call and setting this up.
It was a smooth and seamless transition into the production on day 5 and really proved itself a valuable must have asset.
Can't wait till this goes public.

Do you guys have a frame grab from the daily to look at?
what's the bit rate on the stream that won't bog down?
With 54kbits for 802.11g 108 for dual band or even 320kbits for the n band the compression must be pretty severe for real time...

That's 54Mb/s, not 54Kb/s

My Fios is the fastest version and it runs at 15/50 up/down.
You think WiFi is faster?:001_tt2:
Broadcast 1080i is 19.2 albeit mpeg2.....

Heard some great news from Michael today about Liveplay and I'll leave it to him to tell what the plans are, but it sounds like they have some very good options to make it available to all.
