  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was wondering what size SSD's would be available for the Fixed Scarlet and for the Epic come April of 2011? Is 256GB too much to hope to ask for? Or 512GB? Those sizes would be "epic"! Or will we be stuck by 64GB or 128GB...not bad, but not ideal.

Considering my 64GB Sandisk CF card cost $900, $900 for the 64GB is pretty sweet.

How do you even use the SSD with Scarlet? I have not seen any SSD mount options for Scarlet yet?

They switched the CF slot of the Epic for a SSD slot as standard.
I suppose they won't do the same for the Scarlet to keep the price as low as possible.
But you will be able to buy a SSD module that will go at the back of the camera.

"But you will be able to buy a SSD module that will go at the back of the camera"(Scarlet). Is what I have been looking for. Is there a thread that red confirms this? I had wished you could be able to have in on the side thoe as Epic. But as long it works I glad. Any pics on the module?

Remember, all of the modules work for both Scarlet and Epic. The side SSD module and rear SSD module will both work on Scarlet as well.

Jarred confirmed they are still making the side CF module. It will work on both Scarlet and Epic but they aren't recommending it for Epic because you have to use higher compression ratios due to the slow speed of CF.

So you could take of the CF reader (that comes standard) of you scarlet and put an SSD reader on the side instead. This would save some weight aswell. Is this correct i think I finally understands it.

Correct. Although RED may allow you to pay the difference and get the side SSD with your package.

Now that would be a dream come true! Superthanks everybody.
Almost didn't record nice you Justin, you changed your avatar. Are you holding an Epic and a Scarlet? Where behind the camera of "First Pic of Working Fixed Lens Red Scarlet"?
Cheers!

Two working Epics. ;) Crazy things happen when you hang out at RED Studios Hollywood.

Yes if I can get a fixed scarlet with an SSD instead of the CCF that would be ideal..a dream come true. I'd buy a 256GB SSD...I figure that should give me 150 minutes of shooting.

I wonder how long the battery would last...would I be able to shoot for that 150 minutes continuous (concert)?

Actually. according to this recent post by Jarred, a 256GB SSD on Scarlet should give you more like 200-220 minutes, or even more if you raise the REDCode compression.

3k RC 7:1 = ~ 50-55min on a 64GB SSD

But what about battery power...can you shoot continuous in the field for 200 minutes without running out of juice? Most concerts I need are about 100 minutes...and then a break for changing the battery or SSD and then shoot the last 20 minutes.

Anyone have an idea how long the battery will last for a situation with the cam on the whole time?

What about using a Red Brick? I'm sure one of those will last over 200 minutes.

Which RED BRICK? Are you sure a Red Brick would last over 2 hours with a Scarlet? I'm curious about how long battery life would last with these cams. I'd like something that can shoot for 2 hours without changing the SSD or battery...ideally.

A RED Brick will last "forever" with a Scarlet... it is good for a couple of hours easy with EPIC.

Glad to hear that ! Is it possible to use a RED Brick with the Scarlet traveling charger ? Do you know also how long will last the RED Volt ?
