So here's the skinny.

Yesterday while shooting G & E pulled my power 3 times. After the 3rd time I figured I would check footage on the computer.

The RED Drive will not mount to my computer in any of the ports. When the drive is on the camera the footage is all there.

I called RED last night and they said it could be a file structuring problem and I should try mounting to a PC. Tried and same outcome.

Thoughts and or tips?

Thank you,

I never had a problem with a Red Drive like you are having.
But a method that has worked for my external drives is doing the "disk repair" function using disk utility on the Mac. Don't do a wipe out or re-format.. just repair.
But do it at your own risk. I never tried that with a Red Drive so I have no idea if it will work or not..or make things worse.
Also before this..you should try the fw400 port and usb port to see if those work at all.

Tonaci,

Thank for the reply.

I have tried all of the ports on the back of the RED Drive. FW800, FW400, USB and the LEMO via R2E cable. All with no luck.

How do I use the disk utility if the computer wont see the drive?

Just did a job where I had to use the USB port, the FW ports were dead.

Make sure you're using the AC adapter as well, and trying it in different computers...

Can't wait for the rental houses to start installing the new SSD Modules

this is my same issues. any resolution or progress here? i"m sure it would help others to know that are in/will be in my situation.

Hi Michael,
I had last year once the same problem because the power was suddenly dropped while shooting.
I tried everything above. Finally I plugged it with the USB, added the drive power adapter and had dinner. After 1 1/2 hours it mounted. Then I had to delete the corrupted clip (only the 2GB file, not a whole clip). After this I could download all the other clips without problems.
It looks like a corrupted file could cause this problem. And its more then possible you get a corrupted file when the cam suddenly powers down while shooting.
I would always try it again with connecting the drive to the computer and waiting a couple of hours before sending it in.
After formatting the drive it works without problems until today.
Sure, there are many other reasons and solutions. Hope this helps you a bit further.
Best,
Marc

We had an identical problem occur with our newest REDDrive, but we were eventually able to get it to mount using a PC and copied the contents of the drive off that way. Once we got the data off the REDDrive, we reformatted and have not had a repeat of the problem ever since. It turns out that there was some sort of corrupted file that was causing the problem.

Good luck!

UPS

UPS

Yesterday while shooting G & E pulled my power 3 times. After the 3rd time I figured I would check footage on the computer.

It's for this reason that I try to plug my backup station into house power - Electric is not accustomed to checking for computers on their lines (I've been a gaffer and electrician for 20+ years and it's just not a priority yet). But in any case it's critical to get an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and plug all the drives into the protected side of it.

In fact I'm planning to get a "double conversion" UPS that will not only protect from power loss but help to deal with dirty power as well. More expensive, bigger, probably heavier, but for me it's worth the cost.

Nelson,

I do have a UPS on the computer side. The problem was on the camera side. We were in a place that I needed to power the camera from a power box. My issue (also having been an electrician) is after being told twice by me that they need to check with me before powering down. They were in such a hurry for themselves they just shut everything down to get to the chow line.

Big red tape (maybe even written label) over every plug, inline connection and switch that can cut your camera power is a good idea. I usually also put an inline surge protector for powering the camera from mains.

I think the 'double conversion' would go into the camera power line before going into the backup station. An AC friend had issues with dirty power causing camera problems and suggested that route.

A griptrician in a hurry to get to lunch? You must be joking :-)
