  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's your guess for Epic-L?

Jim Jannard confirmed that even before being renamed, Scarlet S35 had been migrated to the Epic platform (which I assume means greater robustness and more on-brain features, such as HD-SDI) and that, as a result, manufacture has been moved to the U.S., which he acknowledged would be more expensive. So, yeah, it seems that for a number of reasons (beyond the addition of HDRx) Epic-S will be more expensive than Scarlet S35.

Objectively speaking, it would still smoke what competitors are offering in that price range.

But I still can't wrap my head around being happy and thankful for a price increase announcement...

I disagree. I wanted my Scarlet to be my motion camera AND replace my DSLR. Say what you want about shallow DoF being a trendy gimmick nobody really blah blah blah for motion work, it's an indespensible part of the toolkit for still photography. Scarlet 2/3" is a motion camera only in my opinion.

On the other hand, I'd get 300mm or higher (equivalent) out of a vastly lighter lens than the 300 2.8 i lug around now...hmmm...that'd make football games a lot less work....DAMN IT YOU GUYS STOP SUCKING ME BACK IN

LOL. Lee you misunderstood me. I think we're kinda saying the same thing ... basically, the Scarlet S35 would have been more aptly terms a "DSLR killer" (actually getting sick of that term) even at $7,000 for the brain ...

That would have been over double the cost of the 5D, but only $2000 more than a 1D or Af100. However, at $10,000-12,000 (or more) for the brain -- the S35 goes into a different category. Only reasonably well-funded pros will be able to get a brain at that price and a nice shooting package.

But yah, I think everyone was going crazy over the thought of having a $7,000 camera be the "go to" camera for motion and stills, with a bigger sensor, shallow DOF, etc.

Anyway, I don't think Red is the kind of company to arbitrarily hike prices just to have better markup. Whatever the price is, it will be fair, and will deliver WAY MORE than the competition is delivering at similar pricepoints.

Well in the hope that Jim reads this and works out pricing. I think it'll cost $7.5k have a set of 3 lenses, hd-sdi on the brain and 17 inch onboard monitor...

Ok seriously now. I agree that it really needs to be cheaper than the RED ONE as this is a new market segment for RED. They are effectively graduating previous RED ONE owners into the EPIC S and M programme and hope that L/Lite sits below the current R1mx to appeal to a new batch. (that makes us all Gremlins). $17k with all I need to shoot including 1 RED zoom lens would be totally brilliant.

I also agree with the 5k thing. This camera really could do with working with a more widely accessible post workflow, one that is more suited to those who are buying this camera and not always intending to take 5k to cinema. Most of us at this level would aim for a 2k DI right now and editing in 2k is still not easy. So thats 3k thrown away. I'd rather have a RED camera with s35 sensor size (and therefore be able to use stills primes or CPs) and aim to finish in 2k. From a workflow pov I love the Alexa and would love a RED to do do the same things for half to a third of the money. Thats what Scarlet S35 was going to be and I hope it doesnt change altogether.

You definitely don't want Epic-L to have a different sensor.

Most of the cost of these things is development, not manufacturing, like pharmaceuticals. You want to spread that out as much as possible. Epic-L (and Epic-X, not that I care) would be much more expensive with different sensors.

Very good point.

This is just my opinion but I think Red should do away with the 2.8" Monitor. I think it's gonna be too small for run and gun work and accurate focus, not to mention touchscreen control. The 5" will prob be the most sought after on-camera monitor for the Fixed Scarlet and Epic from a physical/ergonomic point of view

Also offering a lens that is designed for the camera as part of a package would make it very attractive to the Low budget indi-market.
Including a 18-50mm T3 or other lens means the indi-guy is ready to shoot straight out of the box.

If Red offers a complete package at an attractive price then those looking at other cameras in the 10-12K price range might spend the extra and get the Epic L

I think the package should contain

Epic-L (with the same side handle as the Fixed Scarlet)
2- 3- 5K 30-60 fps
HDRx
PL Mount
5" Monitor
256 SSD, Side Module, 1.8" SSD Reader/Red Station
Redmote
2 Batterys and Charger
Base Plate

PRICE ????

Offering the RED 18-50mm T3 for 3,000 or a 17-50mm electronic lens as part of this package would make it a very attractive deal.

Just my 2 Cents

My guess:

3k up to 120fps
4k 60fps
5k 24fps
lower Maxmum for REDCODE-settings
everything else identical to epic-x/m

for 10.000USD (body only)

Yeah, lots of wishful thinking included here... :)

Wow this was a scary thread. I thought renaming of Scarlet S35 to Epic Light was just a name change. Not a complete new camera? Just a little higher prize for the HDRx™ feature. My first target is an scarlet fixed and later work me up to the former Scarlet S35. But this make me think that won't happen in a near future. No I hope and think it will still be around 8000-8500 (body).

I am afraid there may be some disappointment in the air as the latest post from Jim - was it in this thread or another, I lose track - suggests that the Epic-S (yes, that is the current name for the camera formerly know as the Scarlet S35), will be somewhere slightly (?) north of $12K. Of course, no one has any idea what that does or doesn't include, if anything. And, as always, that could change, eh? :crying:

..Price..no word yet...numbers were thrown out(12k,16k and 20k) and
Jannard stated much closer to 12k.

Doesn't make too much difference as the specs will be increased with
the price. And if one wants to get into red system for lesser cost..
Scarlet fixed is still there and capable of shooting pretty much anything.

Expect more than the Scarlet S35. But also expect more capability. Think Professional.

I thought all he said was that it would be much closer to $12k than to $16k. You're probably right that it will be more than $12k, but i don't think that was definitively said anywhere.

That was honestly around my guess Terry -- it needs to be close to at least 50% of the Epic-X brain so as not to create too wide a gap in price .... so $13,000-$14,000 seems probable.

Also, because the hardware is largely the same -- with the differences being a few more powerful internal components for extra FPS, Redcode, etc -- I would guess that even at this higher price the Epic-S is actually the less profitable of the two cameras ...

I know that's going to disappoint a bunch of people, but it is what it is. Still a great value and hopefully those who get priced out of the S35 can get the Scarlet 8x, make lots of money, and get it a little later ....

Btw, do you have that post from Jim? ... I seemed to have missed it.

That is correct..could be $10k or $14k..or ??k...roll of the dice..

For the body? Will be interesting to see the new feature. Perhaps faster framerates. I better stick with the fixed scarlet for a long time then. Im to exited of waiting for the Scarlet fixed to complain. I can almost smell it!

I think 10k is a nice round even number.

Couldn't agree more ;)

But I also think it's above 12K. You wouldn't write like that if it was below 12K. As stated before it must be somewhere between 14K and 12K, and since it's "much" closer to 12K my guess is around 13K. But honestly I don't think they have a specific price yet.

This really is making me dizzy. I was finally about to invest in a Zeiss ZF.2 set, and I don't know anymore, because the new price increase could probably mean the end of my day (or should I say 2-year long) dreaming. I really hope it stays under 10K.

the price was always for the brain only.
lets say the brain costs whaever you desired, you still would need to spend 10-15 k without a lens to have workable setup with enough storage and power.
what was your plan for this in the first place?
