  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Aliasing

its a problem in compression or readout of the sensor... probably... media... possible...

we use master primes and i saw some interesting things here as well... if they are full open they show vignetting... on bright days i can see chromatic aberrations but the optical quality is stunning good... hard to see then a such damaged footage.....
media problems.... I thought as well on this also... but we mix drives and cards and I see the problem most on footage which was shot on drives....

we used back then cf cards

was your whole day damaged or only particular shots?

and what helped to hide these disruptions was to add some grain and sharpening (it doesnt look as sexy as it should, but if you need the shot)

it depends on how much detail and contrast is in the picture... so thats the reason why i think on compression problems...
our workaround at the moment is to scale to 2k anamorph what our delivery will be on DCP.... with the scale we get back "resolution"....
on the print we think it will be not that hard visible... we will need to test that as well... our goal was to go as on the last production on 4k printout... but in that case we will go there also to 2k.....
after testing we will see what we do....

I'm not seeing the same artefacts in RCX that are in your TIF, which would imply it is a decoding not an encoding problem.

I don't see it in Baselight either (this is all on my MacBook Pro).

I have seen artefacts that look like this before in FCP when using unlimited RT on large still images.

Yes, as far as MBP Baselight is concerned I am a member of a very exclusive club ;-)

It is REDcineX 351 (no Rocket).

And with further investigation I can find some evidence of that kind of artefact in some areas of the frame, which is brought out if I turn up the OLPF compensation. But it's nowhere near as bad as in the TIF.

Rainer, were the single frame R3D you posted and the TIF both the same frame? Ignore that. I can see from the clip name it isn't!

Single frame and sequence are different takes... so the full frame tiff and the sequence i posted should be from the same shot....
Thats one of my worst situations I have ever been now.... but technical problems can occur and we know it is necessary to look really careful to the footage...

So Nick, softwareencoding with low or no olpf compensation and without postsharpening should show us the problem not that hard as it could be....

Deanan, Rob, Stuart... are you reading ??

thx

Rainer,

why you are just driving us crazy with this "Aliasing" tread.

You should know well that there is no any or minimum (0.05%) aliasing in RED footage.

What does it mean?

You have obviously faulty camera that could probably have been damaged in transport, wrong usage, etc ...

or surely have a faulty recording media.

Also that means your ability to see any artifact on set are zero just because you probably don't have equipment to determine any fault there properly.

You can't run in studio and then there discover shooting artifacts, you have to see them on set and then try out with another back up camera.

If the artifact occurs and repeats again then you should talk about aliasing of RED ONE MX but I not so sure about it...

Also if you need I can rent you my MacPro workstation with RCX installed on SSD, RR card, Avid video RAID, HP Dreamcolor, AJA HDSDI to HDMI converter

and Panasonic 46" plasma and then you can be safe to watch your footage on set.

And again my a bit boring examples below:

Sanjin... please stop posting in this thread.... and please go and play with your toys... we know what we are doing we are professionals....

We try to figure out what exact the problem is... and let us do our work.... big boy

IN RCX 351 I see it not only in the branches, even though it is obviously most visible there. It is in the tombstones etc, and a bit like checkerboard (not only horizontal lines)

I'd guessed that this cam would need a service... Cannot remember ever have seen something similar.

I could take a Baselight test-lisence, just to try to confirm Nicks results, though... -:)

Sanjin... please stop posting in this thread.... and please go and play with your toys...

Rainer, sorry to bother you but there is no any reason for insults and flipping out here ...it's just about a camera...

we know what we are doing we are professionals....

Not so sure because I have big doubts about it...otherwise this can't happen...a real professional have one, even two or

more cameras as a spare back up bodies just in a case...and about all other things I already described above...

Also I always against spreading a lot of FUD about RED especially throughout the treads like this

from less knowledgeable "professionals" or technical savvy crowd here.

And I like my TOYs!!!

I'm ignoring you from now on... its the best way or I will really flip out...

The aliasing on all the monitoring outputs is not really helping in such a strange situation...

hope this is fixed now.... camera is on the way to pinewood...

I'm ignoring you from now on... its the best way or I will really flip out...

A decent person would probably try to apologize...but anyway as you like it...

Sanjin,

You have crapped in this thread enough. We all know that there's no concern for aliasing when everything is working properly. You don't need to keep posting images that show that. Rainer is looking for a solution to his problem and you're being a jackass.
