Hi, at present l have a Mac with CS5 running 64bit also running FCP, my current output to an external monitor via HD SDi is through a Matrox LE, which does not support CS5 what other cards can be recommended for CS5 with play back via HD SDi, l am not running red rocket at present or will be in the near future.

Timelines are normally of mixed footage not just RED

Ay recommendations will be most helpful.

There's no perfect solution for the Mac: nVidia's SDI output (expensive anyway) is not supported under OS X.

With that in mind is it better to steer clear of CS5 due to its lack of third party support and go with FCP with all its rendering issues, nothing is ever straight forward :)

Is it because CS5 is not really accepted yet within the community!

Be good to hear from Adobe re these HD SDi external monitor issues, matrox promised support for CS5 months ago its gone very quite on this, and as yet nothing has come of it!

Not heard that, if thats true its a big move as BBC was FCP and Avid, this will have an impact on editing software used in the UK, where the BBC people in some way or other tend to follow.

I've always had good luck with AJA products.

I don't know which of their cards support CS5, but I know at least the new Kona 3G does.

They are on back order at present, and so I can't give you any guidance from first hand experience, but I'd be happy to report back once the card shows up.

Given my excellent experience with AJA I'm confident it will work.

Cheers,

Steve

Many thanks Steve, l will look into the AJA card.

Yes, the BBC have bought 2000 licenses of CS5. It's all part of their latest round of cost-cutting, nothing more...

My understanding is that BBC wanted the Master Suite for After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and to use Premiere to be compatible with outside vendors using Premiere.

In other words... it does not reflect any material change in the software they are using in house. Adobe products have always been part of the mix there.

Getting back on topic...

I am impressed with the Black Magic Decklink 3D card. Its $995. It works with CS5.

It also works with Resolve, which makes it a high priority for me right now.

The fact that it supports stereo workflow is important for me going forward, but not an immediate consideration.

Of more immediate concern... the DeckLink Extreme supports 8 channels of audio over HDMI, where the lower end products only support 2 channels.

Have to disagree. FCP has too many of its own issues. Neither solution is perfect. CS5 is working well here. If you're having issues after the 5.0.2 upgrade, you may need to trash all the plist and related files and reinstall/update before launching Premiere.

But your'e right, nothing is ever straight forward... At least not if you're working on the bleeding edge. If you're still editing DV, then just about anything works with 99.9% reliability these days.

What lack of third party support? Can we help you with anything? We work very closely with AJA, BlackMagic, Matrox, RED (notice?) and many others? What third party support are we lacking in? Serious question...

Cheers

Hi David, thanks for saying hello, l do have CS5 and use PPro from time to time and wish l could use it more a lot more. It's a great product and l love the fact that you can use native files, the only way for the future as far as l can see. The idea is great, l have on file and need at constant finger tip over 6 TB of footage from over 35 countries and hundreds of destinations, thousands of locations, so nothing is ever put to bed on various formats the next being RED once the new cameras are released.

The main problem at present is that say with Colorista II it works fine in FCP and after effects but complete pants in CS5 sticky buggy and takes for ever. I like to grade on my timeline. Matrox was supposed to support CS5 but still doesn't l know AJA to and blackmagic do but its not as open in creating timelines as FCP.

At present my timeline will contain P2 EX HDV and if unfortunate old DV, it mainly goes down to 1280 x 720 sometimes 1080.

Ah, I see, I guess he's not in their marketing department then:)

Nope I am the engineering manager for MediaCore (core video formats), dynamiclink and Adobe Media Encoder. I have been working closely with Rob and Deanan to make our RED support top class. I will ask around about our Colorista support.

Not sure why my avatar photo isn't updating...

Cheers

Colorista 2 is not real time on Premiere, is just the way Premiere and MB are ported, so it won't work as smoothly on Premiere as on FCP, one of the very few cases, but I can use it on even RED footage without much trouble, other than a little sluggish timeline play. It is a little slow but nothing to impede work, at least for me.
