Serious Questions about a "new deal"

Jim, just so I can understand. This new handmade Epic X would cost around 45K? Would we have to execute our Stage 2 to get it? And there is no trade-in value? What would be the approximate "premium" or net additional cost to a Stage 2 Epic X reservation holder to get one of these?

I need to beg my producer Nigel to do this, so I need some rough numbers.

Do you think these handmade Epics will have extra value in the future? Maybe you could make the body out of something special - carbon fiber, some special metal, etc, so they will really, truly be collectors items?

Mainly carbon and titanium mix!!!

But also you can find magnesium, aluminum, copper, glass and plastic parts.

It looks like about $25,000 more than stage 2 for a handmade Epic. And you don't get that accessory package (approx. $5k).

If you can make $30,000 in 2 months it would be worth it.

You don't get anything except a brain for about $45K.

After reviewing this thread I am more convinced than ever we should build these machined, hand built bodies. I'll announce a price (probably around $45K just for the brain) and see if anyone wants them.

With our new facility opening in April we need to make sure we have cameras in time. Seems like this is going to be our best bet to ensure we get them when we need them instead of having to look elsewhere (which I would hate to even consider). You can most likely count me in for this and I look forward to "final" details. A few questions which I realize might not get answered here but I'd love to know before the "buy now" button is live.

-- Can we also order accessories such as the Pro I/O module or even (I know this is a stretch) the REDmote? Even if we have to pay a premium for these to also be hand built it would be something I'd seriously consider.

-- I know you guys are hesitant to give delivery dates, but when the hand built option is available and we place our official order can we have a guarantee that we'll get these in our hands by February or so at the latest? This would make the decision to spend the premium for the hand built options pretty much a no-brainer for us.

-- Any limit on quantity? We're looking to have as many as 5 for our facilities.

-- Am I correct in assuming any orders for hand built cameras won't cancel our existing Stage II order? So we can still get a couple hand built and wait for our Stage II to arrive at its normal time.

How does this time schedule influence the Scarlets? Will they also be out before NAB '11?

Not likely. As far as I know they will be focusing on getting all pre-ordered EPIC-X's out of the door before they ship any Scarlets. At least I sure hope so. I'm sure they will be pretty busy just building EPICs - especially now that production and assembly seems to have been moved to the US. I'm guessing (!) we'll see Scarlets during summer at the earliest.

Any chance of a Scarlet hand-built ? (dibbs)
Come to think of it my no budget film prob wont be able to afford one.
2011 is going to be another milestone for digital cinema, I can't wait.

Please, start building and selling Epics! There is a market and you will sell out, AND if you offer via RED ONE delivery date there is no cutting in line. This is a great option for those that can afford it (and heck the rentals will pay for it, in spades!!!!!)

I would love to buy one, but we just spent our money on a 3700. We still have our stage 3.5 epic in plan and I really hope it happens before we go into production on our feature.

Scarlet appears to be late 2011 based on this info. I'm still going to buy a few of those as well.

We will learn a lot from the process. If no one wants them, I'll keep them for myself...

No hards feelings about the thread, the comments and the banter. It is all for the best.

Jim

BRAVO.

BTW... if we DO do this program, a handful would be shipped in Dec. and more in January.

Jim
Obviously this means that not only is the hardware ready... but the firmware must be as well. This is pretty exciting stuff.

Happy Thanksgiving Jim!

Also, Jim, the only thing I see as UNFAIR is that it is
UNFAIR to your competition for you to create a MASTERPIECE
of a camera system called EPIC.

:)

Down to 7.5 seconds boot up time... :-) Still some things to get in there...
