Hi everyone!
Please, can someone help me to know well all kind of drives RED has sold?

320 GB old
320 GB upgraded
640 GB

It's correct? and why they "upgraded" 320 ones?

Thanks for the reply!
And what kind of upgrade the old drives receive? Hardware substitution?

Michele
As far as i know the old drives get a new hardware component installed. So you have to send them in.
Connect the drive to your camera. Then go through the menu to the status screen.

System
Project
Status
View

On that screen you see the serial of the media.
Does the number end with "xx_x_f" it`s an old drive and needs to be upgraded.
I would suggest you copy send the serial number of your drive and send it to red. They will tell you what to do.

I hope i could help with that.

Best regards.

How can one tell if a drive is 320 or 640 from the outside?

"Elektrotripper" you need to post your real name to the Real Name thread over at Recon. Thanks.

The 640GB has a serial number on it the 320GB are just dumb.
You are so right with your question there should have labeling of capacity and serial numbers so you can track how old the drive is.

Elementary my dear Watson

The 640 drive we purchased is clearly labeled 640 gigabytes. The 320 drive is not.

In practical terms I'm not sure 640 is that useful. Would you really want to shoot more than 320 without backing up?

Ideally no, but for live events and nature work, you may want continuous takes. Not everyone works like narrative drama or commercials.

It is never a good idea to fill up a harddisk - so even if you only need 320, it doesn't hurt to have twice as much.

And as life goes, chances of something exciting happening are high just around the time you have to swap a mag. ;)
