Wanted to raise some thoughts for REDUser discussion.
Was wondering if playback display and navigation logic on DSMC, but also Red One, can be improved over the existing system on Red One.
At the moment, one can only navigate through clips full frame sequentially in a very clunky way, and if there are a lot of clips it gets painful and frustrating. Trying to go faster only ends up with storing of button pushes which just means navigation lags unuseably (a function of not having small proxy thumbnails to speed up navigation??). When you're at one end of the magazine, you can't wrap round at the end to start at the beginning or vice versa (mentioned several times before I remember).
There's a joystick, can we use that to help separate navigation functions - maybe use it as a scrub wheel?
Button logic is inconsistent - in fast forward, pressing fast rewind goes into X1 reverse; in fast rewind, pressing fast forward goes into X2, not X1 forward (ie normal play). In play, pressing play goes into pause; in fast fwd/rwd it goes into play whereas it would arguably be more consistent to pause.
With the DSMC intended for professional stills, as well as motion, where it's not unusual for hundreds if not thousands of still pictures to be taken on an assignment, playback display and navigation absolutely must be improved.
Red really should take the best of the competition (yes that means Canon, Nikon, Sony & Panasonic consumer compact and pro DSLR stills, consumer and pro motion cameras) and at least match their ease of use.
That means fuller use of ergonomic principles - thumbnails, thumbnail pages (ie easy zoom in/out of file & folder structure), maybe file & folder naming, scroll wheels, multifunction joysticks, concave/convex/different shaped/textured/guarded buttons for selection by fingertip feel (without having to look), button grouping, two button key presses for locking out accidental presses, consistent button logic and so on.
Although touchscreens open up some great control options, they should only be in addition. There is no tactile feedback, so you always have to look to use them - which is appropriate for some controls, but not all. Touchscreens may also not always be available, so should not be relied upon to replace any physical controls.
Obviously, Red One is limited in how much it can be improved as the physical controls are not changeable, and is limited in processing power so thumbnails are probably impossible, but even the simple start/end wraparound when navigating many clips and not storing button pushes would make things easier!
