  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Number of SSDs for your Epic?

and so the info is inside this thread:

These are Custom RED SSDs. Off-the-Shelf SSD's do not have a high enough wear rate on their connectors.

You will need the RED STATION to read them, and like Deanan mentioned, they are wicked fast.. as our Media always is :)

64GB SSD $950.
128GB SSD $1800
256GB SSD $3200

R1 SSD Camera Module $1500
EPIC SSD Camera Module $2500

So I guess my questions is, is only (2) of the 256 unreasonable?
For my money, you always want to carry spares...

How about (for a very slight price increase over 2x 256) 1x 256 + 2x 128? that way, you've got three cards, the same overall amount of storage and a bigger SSD for those longer takes when you need it?

Or do you think you'd need to have more than one long-run card?

The additional cost if you decided to go the three card route with a single 256 over the dual 256s would be $400 according to the current figures. Of course, they may change by the time these hit the streets, but that's only a 6.25% increase for the safety of a third card - good value imo if you can manage with just that single 256...

Cheers,
Dom.

That's a good suggestion -- I'll give it a ponder... I'm Stage III so it looks like I'll have some time for said ponder

I think I wil go 3 per camera, but will not have al the same large size, but will prefer
to have also some of the smaller ones, as I simply don't like to have large amount
s of Data in one card, I fill per example that in my Photography work even with 80MP
Digital Backs a 64GB is sufficient in off.

Dainty BANG! How are you buddy... I think what Mark means by the sweet spot in the sense that 128s will be a gold standard for 5K HDRx shooting. I prefer media that you need to download more consistently for safety sake. While large storage has its application, I dont like to get in the habit of rolling all day on a single card/drive. Budget reason I will probably get a couple 64s. Hope your well man. Cheers.

Clay!!! I'm awesome bud, just been shooting a ton. How about you?! Whats new? Saw some FB pics, being out at see looked so great!

I don't know what to get for SSDs, I was originally thinking 2 or 3 SSDs, but I see the advantage to more drives. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm not intending to buy any.

I will use my Red RAID for personal projects, and rent SSDs if/when I need them.

dont know if you will fully benefit from epics features when using good old drives.
hdrx, several compression ratios and slo mo at 5k.
i dont want to drive a ferrari and not boost around with 300 mph because i did save on seat belts

Does anyone recall the price of the SSD module? Not the side SSD module on the body, but the one that goes on the back. Does it hold two SSD's?

do we know how much GB per minute HDRx™™ with redcode 5:1 @5k will be ?
guess this will be the leading factor for me.

Depends on the scene (VBR), probably 200-250 MB/s = 12-15 GB/min.

$1500, and supposedly it would, yes. But the card sticks out of the module a bit.

12-15 GB/min.

WHAT?!
well, I suppose if taking into consideration 5k full frame, 16 bit color, compression 5:1, and multiply all that by 2 for HDRx™, then I guess it would be around THAT! Imagine shooting SloMo!

Slow-mo would take the same (of realtime shooting) and divide the chosen bandwidth per frames.

And yes...5K 16 bit RAW 2.5:1, or HDRx 5:1 motion has a price.
The price is 1GB every 4 seconds. :)
