Avid MC5 via AMA - Imported RED Image is being cropped

Hi all. Wondering if someone has encountered this:

I've been testing Red workflows with MC5 for an upcoming feature. AMA links the the files fine, and while they don't play very well on my macbook pro, when transcoded all is fine.

However, compared to files transcoded via Redcine X or even an older version of Red Rushes, the files brought into the Avid via AMA are cropped a little - both at the top and bottom and at the sides. I'd approximate about 3-5 %.

What's interesting, if you adjust the AMA files via the "Source Settings" dialog box, in the preview image you can see the full size image and there appears to be no cropping.

It would be simpler and easier, I think, to do my transcoding in MC after linking via AMA, but this is alarming, and I don't want to lose picture information (since finish will likely be in HD played out to tape from MC5).

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Aaron.

nicely spotted, just came across the same thing myself. About 3-5% of the image is cropped with AMA MC import

cheers

Wow, that does it alright. Great tip. How else was I supposed to figure that one out? Not exactly intuitive...

Thank you!

Agreed - the default should be showing all of the original aspect ratio.

very nasty, we have a whole feature that is cropped.... not always that you have the photographer on hand to look at the material and verify the aspect, OH well!!!

Marcus

hehe, 12TB material.... no thanks :-) Unless you are offering ...

Is this because you transcoded via AMA?

Michael

This has been fixed for the next release.

Michael

Can someone explain to me a little more clearly the fix for this?

I can't find a "Reformat" column, etc.

Thank you

If you go to "choose columns" in the bin, you will see a heading called "Reformat." This is in MC v5. Once that column is in your bin view, you can select on a per clip or multiple clips the desired aspect ratio for that clip - whether it be cropped, stretched, or letter/pillarbox.

The fix is that it will default to letter/pillar box for aspect ratio for rasters that are greater that 16:9 on either axis.

Michael

That worked.

Thank you for always monitoring and replying so quickly Michael.

I have the same problem, for a different reason with 2K 16:9 2048 x 1152 footage.

The reformat column doesn't help - the footage is already in the right aspect ratio of 16:9. Choosing letterbox or stretched shouldn't make any difference.

It's about whether to process 2048 x 1152 to 1920 x 1080 [which is complicated maths] or just crop out all pixels beyond the centre 1920 x 1080.

Avid effectively crops out 16% of the image.

I'll be glad to see this fixed [along with main thread bus errors, and crushed blacks caused by lack of "restrict to SMPTE range" option].

Hey Nigel,

Curious about your comment about the "restrict to SMPTE range". I'm working on a project where the transcoding to DNX media is being done for me on set and I'm wondering if this box should be checked or not. Lots of dark stuff and crushed blacks in this show too.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

What are they using to transcode with on set?

Michael

They're using RedCine X, the lastest build. They're making me DNX 175x media from the Red files and I'm merging the AAF and ALE files on import to get all the metadata.

IMO it's definitely worth checking the box, otherwise you get poor dynamic range and no details in the shadows. You can always crush the blacks [throw away detail] in the Avid if that's the look you want.
When you check the image in the Y waveform monitor in CC mode, without that option checked you'll see lots of data below the line - out of range for CIR601 or Rec709.

Redcine-x only got this option back around May [and it didn't work at first] - a bit like the Avid at the moment.

Before that I used the import dialogue to bring footage into Avid, using the option to define incoming footage as RGB [0-255], which meant Avid should convert it. However it used to just chopped all the data below 16 and above 235, rather than move it within range, which didn't fix the problem.

Ok, i'm looking at one of my shots with the Y scope and there is data below "16" but it's colored white, and so defined as "illegal". It is there though. Does this mean I've preserved the shadow detail or clipped it?
