Scarlet 2/3 (Digital to 35mm Transfer Quality)

"The Tracy Fragments" was shot with a DVX100, which is SD, and it looked great when I saw it in the theater. "Murderball" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" were/are also shot with it, i've heard. If they look passable on the big screen, I imagine that the Scarlet 2/3" will look fantastic.

Hi All,
I'm new to this RED community. I'm planning to make a movie with $20000 for first Digital copy. Then if I'm able to sell the movie. I want it to be transferred to 35mm Film. I want to know if the quality will be good from digital to film in scarlet 2/3. How much do you think will be the wait time for scarlet 2/3 once it is released?

Thanks in Advance for your answers

chikloo

have your found a post house to record out your footage to film yet??

The 2/3 Scarlet will look plenty good for a film out. Don't worry about that. The EX1 or EX3 would look decent too, assuming your DP has some skill and your editor and colorist have some knowledge and skill.

I would be much more worried about your story, actors and sound.

"The Digital Cinema Society..."

From the list

Forbidden Kingdom (Jackie Chan) looked awesome on the big screen (Genesis).

The L Word has been looking pretty crappy last season, with blown out highlights all over the place (Sony Cinealta). I had a feeling they were shooting digital, but perhaps the directors weren't familiar with the limitations of the digital sensors?

Hi
i think u do little check on the films like:
21days later - on Canon XL2 -DV
Borak - on varicam 24P ( 1280x720p)
Lars Von Triers - dancer in the dark
once upon the time in Mexico

none of these are larger than 2/3 inch CCD

i think u miss the point, and too much on technical side.
Hire a competent DP, understand the DI workflow.
just lit it a bit flatter and dont burn the highlight.
focus on ur story telling. thats it

really, simple technics always works, shoot progressive and make it 25 or 24P
both can work easily.

cheers
K.M.Lo

Slumdog had some very video-looking noise at times, so as K.M. said, light it a little flatter (don't underexpose), and the camera won't be your limitation.

in general you might look at other movies that were shot on a single 2/3" chip camera's ...
according to the home webpage at cineform.com, 2/3 of what is shown on the movie screen of "slumdog millionaire" was shot on the SI 2k camera ( 2/3" chip) .. the remainder was shot on 35mm .. it is now playing in theaters ....
looked good to my eye !!

Some shots in Slumdog had horrible noise in the blacks, especially the slum handhelds. I guess they didn't have a chance to check since they were real slums they shot in. At first I saw the noise in the game show scenes and I thought they were going for a deliberate tv noise feel but then it also appeared in other scenes. To be honest I was quite dissapointed in some (some shots/scenes were also great) of the cinematography but blown away by the story.

Hi CHIKLOO,
I know that you got several answer and its a year ago of this post but I wanna tell You something which could be still interesting regarding the film-making in INDIA. First of all I am from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India and researching the subject from past 2 and ½ years. and here is what I got...
1. Canon's 5d mkII is right choice for making a movie/feature film to release on 35mm prints.
2. Zeiss announced a CP.2 lens kit which are pl mount cinema lenses and has a EF mount conversion process, which can be done at home easily, to use of canon cameras especially 5D MK II.
3. You have to use camera rigs e.g. redrock micro or cinevate bravis etc.
4. 5d is a full-frame camera and has a sensor with 24mm X 36mm size, which is larger then the traditional 35mm motion format. Also the traditional 35mm motion format isn't 24mm X 36mm its vertical in term of motion/feature film and hence the size is 21.95mm X 16mm which is called academy format. The format which is now in fashion is 22mm X 9.47mm so U can crop the image captured from the 5d.
5. Till the sep 2010 canon add 24fps and 25fps to 5d mkII so don't worry about cinematic style capturing.
What u have to do is rent above equipments and shoot a 5min movie and make a transfer to 35mm then make ur decision.
6. don't use a camera that have a filter diameter less than 55mm, nikons are 44.
7. check the sony's new nex vg10 or a55 also, these aren't have 24fps but if u r satisfied with video quality then use a computer on location to capture the movie at 24p or transfer to 30p to 25/24p.

@ David Mullen. Is the Cannon 5d HDMI output uncompressed? By incorporating a pro-res recorder taking signal from the hdmi port, is it possible to get rid of the line skipping problem? It would be awesome if such recorders could record at higher resolutions! BTW there is a cheaper pro-res recorder coming up:-

I have being researching on the internet for sometime and can't seem to find a definite answer. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think these tools are for long time recording but as far as I know dslr's card recording would be better than these tools recording. If we are working on a feature film like project we can afford any card with high speed and then transfer the data to our PCs as the feature films shots are short in length then any other kind of shooting eg documentary or anything. The matter is what kind of camera at low price can shoot a movie that can be transfer to a 2k 35mm film. I think recording limit cannot be interrupt for a feature film shooting through the 5d, 7d, 60d or even a 550d here in INDIA.

Hi chikloo, Also chk the canon's 550d on canon.co.in or find cinematic or film shot on youtube.

Mr Pankaj why are you more concerned about canon cameras only too. panasonic's gh1 also do the same job in best way as i know that. and also you told that canon adds 24 and 25 fps to its recording formats by sep 2010. i think canon is not released that yet.

Just a little nugget to throw out there...

Most of those 24P video cameras actually record 23.976. Its a small detail, albeit very significant.

Maybe David pr M_Most can chime in, but i dont know of many VIDEO (not raw or rawish) that can do REAL 24fps. I actually prefer 23.976. Makes most deliverables easier, and when its time to do a filmout, it is easily fixed (the audio that is, so it stays in sync)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Panavised F900 and the Varicam could both do a solid 24 FPS.

My camera does 23.976 and 24fps. Thomson Viper.

As You ask about GH1, it's sensor size is very small and here the final result will be going to display through a 35mm film projector, so the cinema scope size of 35mm motion film projection is 22mX9MM as more wide in now days and the standard size is 22mmX12MM. about the 24p and 25p of canon 5d its released in sep 2010.
