"Somewhere" by Sophia Coppola - Digital noise intentionally added.

Tonight I saw "Somewhere" by Sophia Coppola and found out that digital noise intentionally was added.

That's exactly what I would do always to kill videoish sharpness of any digital print that was generated from digital or analog source of acquisition.

Sharp image is obviously not an artistic trend at the moment and additional film noise simulation of a certain film stock is probably the future of digital cinema.

I personally love film noise in moving images and always add it myself.. Stills on the other hand I can go both ways.. I love a super clean high rez still that was shot with beautiful light..

Somewhere was shot on film. No grain added since it is already there.

I think he means he grabbed the frame (in the theatres) with a 7D / Leica zoom. Looks like a theatre from the thumbnail. If that's the case, that's a pretty good frame-grab !

No sensible professional would shoot a feature with no 7D-- especially with an inferior lens like a Leica. Blech!

I meant to emote a Smiley Face to jest Sanjin but it didn't take. Just emoting smilies, Sanjin!

Hmmmmm. We are slaves to our past, aren't we?

It certainly is true that a sharp image is not in vogue at the moment. That's certainly to Canon's advantage, as the 5D, etc. would have gone nowhere if it were. But this is just a passing fad, and not the future of digital cinema. This too shall pass, as did the Blair Twitch syndrome of a decade ago.

I have a feeling that noise is useful somewhere between eye and brain interpretation that makes stuff look 'natural', and is not just a style to be added or something to do with nostalgia. Super sharp can be distracting in a way that creates a distance between viewer and image.

Andrew,

definitely it was shot on film with very clean stock but that grain didn't look as a normal film grain because the grain speed was pretty fast that looked to me more as it was added in post.

"Somewhere" on set photo where you can see cinematographer Harris Savides ASC, probably with Arriflex (4)35 film camera by Otto Nemenz and director of the film Sofia Coppola.

The skin tones are much too nice to be from a 7D
Definitely "Somewhere" was not shot on 7D!!!! :embarassed:

Who said that?

Although I shot the movie's digital projection on 7D for a few seconds.

Sanjin, do you really think it is cool to post illegally obtained images on a public forum ?

Steve,

no need to hunt anybody just because it could be considered as a sort advertising of the movie... a facebook like methods...
