Is it right, that all EPICS for stage 2 and stage 3, will be deliverd, before the first Scarlet, hits the street?

Jim mentioned, that scarlet will be ready before april 2011.

that would mean, that around 7000 EPICS have to be deliverd before april 2011?

There are some false assumptions. First, not all RED ONE owners optioned for stage 2 or 3.
Then, who said that EPIC would be delivered COMPLETELY before Scarlet will be released?

The original announcement last October regarding the various stages did specifically say that stages one to three would be completed before Scarlet, didn't it?

They have stated the programs are parallel to each other. Scarlet 2/3" schedule is not dependent on Epic stages delivery. It is impacted by Epic's development path, but once Epic and all the system modules are in production, Scarlet 2/3" brains should follow pretty quickly.
Scarlet S35 schedule may or may not be impacted by the demand for Epic and the availability of sensors needed to meet that demand, we don't know what is involved there.

Especially since Scarlet is not built in the US like EPIC is.

I only recall that the Scarlet release would follow the Epic release by a couple of months. Never heard that all Epics would be delivered before any Scarlets. Besides who can say when "all" the Epics have been released, thats a moving target.

It would be my assumption that as soon as all stage II cameras have been delivered Scarlett starts as well, and not after Stage 3 and 3.5.

I think we all sort of figured something like that, but if we want RED to prosper we also have to be realistic and understand that the world is catching up. Starting to sell Scarlet S35 a couple months after Epic-X starts shipping makes a lot of sense. It is sort of a combination of an R1-MX/scaled down Epic so maybe a little easier to build, test, and support. It gives RED something to sell at more normal margins and new customers something to buy while trade/discount Epic-X's get made and delivered.

It's all the same sensor right? Which has been made for months so their fab can ramp up the production by a lot without slowing down Epic-X (or already has-since I suspect that setup is one of the biggest expenses so they run the whole order at once and increasing the order doesn't change delivery much). I was thinking it is pretty close to the same body, but just looked at the RED.com and it is showing EXACTLY the same body , which makes sense since the difference in the "engines" inside probably isn't a lot in terms of physical size. So not a lot of difference for assembly/testing - and probably enough gross profit to justify assembly costs in the US. (I think it was the cheaper 2/3" Scarlets that needed the overseas manufacturing to meet cost and volume targets.

Maybe some priority to R1 owners is in order. I'm not sure how that would work exactly, but it would be kind of ironic if waiting Epic-Xers looking for a second camera had to go buy the new Sony!

I think Epic should first be available to the mass and especially to all the professionals that want to buy directly from the store when it's listed over there as available like the R1 is now, before Scarlet starts shipping.
I think it's more appropriate to have the superb camera system available for everybody that wants to pay the price and make some smaller system available some months behind that. Some system like you have with the bigger cars , first they throw in the luxury models with heavy engines , and later on , you'll be able to buy it with a lighter engine and less options;....

This might be a little hard to some off you , but I think is the most logical way to give people who do take a risk in their lives and are really serious in investing in such system , some area to breath and relax and not having to care to much about another thousands off cheaper camera's and cheaper sollutions eating their market.

I'd like to buy some Scarlets asap aswell, but let's be honest, The Epic will be and should be most important for RED right now. Afterwards Jim can do what he wants (maby now as well off course) , but it would be nicer to all loyal customers I think.

Hey, stage 3 people are people too. :)

I sincerely hope that stage 3 is not far behind stage 2.
The lack of current info about the stage 3 is kinda worrying though.

@ Michael:

The first Scarlett out is not the S35, with the same sensor as the Epic-X but the 2/3 Fixed one.

@MIlan:

Hehe off course, and I also have stage III cameras, but fortunately several stage II as well,
but it just makes sense that the Fixed Scarlett be released after Stage II and not after all stages of Epic-X have been completed,
as this IMO will take too long, and would not be a good move for RED neither fair to al of those awaiting for Scarlett,
with out a camera, we of stage III we have the R1 with or without MX.

That was the plan, but Jim said it would require finding a new manufacturing partner - not practical to do here.

The world changes, plans change, I'm just saying I can see how doing Scarlet S35 first makes a lot of sense, it's obvious the world is clamoring for a better low cost S35 camera, NOT a better 2/3" camera and competition is on its way so won't be surprised if that becomes RED's priority.

Indeed, this makes a lot of sense.

At the first place Jim's vision was a professional pocket size camera. Got sometime ago GoPro Hero and it is a pretty amazing camera for about $250 despite of fixed lens, fixed focus and no LCD for viewing. While playing with it have thought that it would really be something if in addition to this line of Epic and Scarlets there was literally a pocket size professional 2K/3K RED camera that was waterproof deep enough. The GoPro housing costs around $25 and is waterproof down to 60m. So, while many are seeking for S35 cameras there might as well be a market for real pocket size cameras targeted for professional needs.

I doubt they're going to wait. Jim implied he hoped scarlet s35 would be out before April. I highly doubt RED can fulfill all Stage 2-3 orders of Epic within 4 months considering they haven't delivered any yet.

I'm sure RED can do two things at once now. ;)

Let's say Epic has 18.000 part to build and guess Scarlet has 14.000 parts.

Red need right away a product to race with upcoming competitor that means Scarlet should come first.
