  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the future of fcp : New LightWorks free from 29 November !

Same question here.
For RED or ProRes, I supposed it was just a matter of downloading or not the codecs/REDCODE RAW support, but for XDCAM and stuff I don't see why it can't be included with the program...
If those formats are not in the free package, the software has to come as cheap as FCP I think or they'll have some trouble to sell the stuff.

Anyway, looking forward to it 'cause it sounds like a nice piece of software.

If Lightworks annouce to support RED Codec and RED Rocket, probably some people in RED Staff have some informations to give here ???

Please dear friends ....

Subject: GPU support

Will Lightworks support Cuda or other GPU based parallel processing for functions or is it primarily CPU based?

Hi David,

Lightworks currently uses the GPU for all effects and other tasks. So the better the GPU, the more realtime effects layers you’ll get. CPU is used as well, but we do utilize the GPU a lot. We don’t make any specific use of Cuda yet, although we have had a look at it.

Very excited about this. Yes the program is open source but add-ons are bought via the store but I really don't see them being that expensive. The whole point is to get as many people as possible using the system and then recouping through the store.

Thanks for posting the email David, and for asking the question.

At home I use CS5 but despise PP for editing on. Its a damn pain in the ass. I prefer editing in Avid but don't like using Avid either. I've heard people sing Lightworks praises for an eon but never had the opportunity to try it out.

Two things to be excited about Storm and Lightworks and both very inexpensive.

Never needing to save.
How many times has fcp or avid or ae burned me without an autosave.

Lightworks builds a database as you work so there is no need to ever worry about saving. That is thoughtful.

Been waiting to try this for a while, I'll do a Bootcamp for the trial, I can't see the plug-in support costing too much, well I hope not anyway. Biggest issue I could see is support, or lack thereof. They're already late with this release, and hardware compatibility issues are on my mind as well.

Still, free is great, Windoze not so much for me but I'm about to just say screw OSX for the mere fact of just being tired of the limited hardware options and the "Mac tax."

Would love to try this out for a low-cost video assist operation vs. Qtake. Esp. with the possibility of stereo capture, which hopefully would also translate to Multi-camera simultaneous capture...

Nothing new from RED around the use of their codec and RedRocket card in LightWorks ?

Will be the RED codec free for this editing tool ?

If its open-source then where is the source-code? Is it free or is it open-source? Its definitely not the ugliest looking open-source program on the planet. I'll stick with PProCS5.
