Shot entirely on the MX.... all available light...

Its a short doc about the realities of a dying america as our elders knew it.

The short studies a 3rd generation steel fabricator running his grandfathers business while he struggles to find someone to pass the tradition on to.

Sebastian,

Thanks for the extremely kind words. It was deeply meaningful for the three of us who went and met Neil. He is so natural in front of the camera... especially for being the first time he'd ever even been around one.

Thanks again!

very nicely cut and quite a personal doc....extremely well done! conrats

It was very personal for us as well.. Neil just started talking and his story was astounding... It kind of brought us into his world and we all really wanted to make something that he would be proud of.

Thanks for the nice comments!

I thought it was truly fantastic. You guys managed to give a soul and character to these inanimate tools, which is impressive.

The only adjustment I would make would be to put subtle room tone throughout the piece so it doesn't cut to silence every time he's not talking. I watched it with headphones and found that a little distracting.

Congratulations !
Very "professional" movie !
Shot with which lenses ?

Pierre,

Thank you for your comment!

It was shot with two MX reds, one set of zeiss super speeds, and the RPZ 17-50mm... Most of the shots are on the RPZ however.

Thanks again

Outstanding job. Really love your style and the slow rhythm.

I´m doing something like that here in Germany in the moment.
This kind of slow paced "take your time" documentary had a long tradition over here. Till the 1990s you could see them like 45 minutes long a lot. Now they do maybe 10 to 15 minutes stuff, edited like a music video (vomit).

I don´t care. I take my time to approach my subjects and do 45 minutes.
Most of the stuff is about old dying crafts, like hat makers or a petroleum lamp factory that still looks like 1930s.

best, Frank

Very nice piece! Not to pry but are you self funding this? I really hope there are still people making great Doc's like this and getting paid for it! You should feel twice as good if your are not. Does that make sense?

Thanks so much Taylor... Yes in fact we headed over there with our cameras and some super speeds and sticks loaned from Redman Movies here in Utah. We decided it was a story worth telling and covered the costs ourselves.

Thanks again for the nice words..
